Gli ARAWAK nascono nella primavera del 2003 dalla passione comune per il reggae roots. Gli Arawak, attualmente composti da Franco Canu (voce+chitarra ritmica), Andrea Sau (tastiere), Carlo Manca (Batteria), Gabriele Cordedda (basso), Giovanni Sanna (chitarra solista), Elena Temo (voce), Alfredo Puglia (tastiere+dub master) e Lello Muresu (percussioni), hanno l'occasione di aprire i concerti a gruppi come Radici nel cemento, Villa ada, e ad un notissimo gruppo ska catalano: gli Obrint Pas. Nel 2008, dopo un anno di lavorazione è uscito il primo cd "ROOTS VIBRATIONS" che contiene 8 canzoni delle quali 3 in lingua sarda e 5 in lingua inglese. Le canzoni trattano diversi temi tra i quali il rapporto con la musica reggae e i problemi sociali caratteristici della Sardegna. Nel Luglio 2008 la band viene invitata ad esibirsi nell'area Show Case del ROTOTOM SUNSPLASH (Osoppo -Udine),nel mese di Agosto la band si esibisce sul Main Stage del SARDINIA REGGAE FESTIVAL (Banari-Sardegna), nella stessa serata accompagna come backing-band quattro grandi nomi del panorama reggae inglese quali Errol Bellot, Chanter, Brother Culture e YT, creando uno spettacolo originale e poliedrico. Sempre nel mese di Agosto la band, invitata dalla organizzazione, si esibisce sul Main Stage del SIKULA REGGAE FESTIVAL (Rosolini-Sicilia) precedendo l'esibizione dell'artista italo-jamaicano Alborosie, riscuotendo un successo particolare sia tra il pubblico che tra la giuria tecnica formata da nomi noti quali Bunna (Africa Unite), Roy Paci (Roy Paci & Aretuska)e altri. Questa giuria,infatti, gli conferisce il primo premio del Sicula Reggae Festival Award 2008. La band nel Novembre 2008 parte per un tour in Spagna e si esibisce in quattro zone dell'Andalusia promuovendo una musica che viene accolta con grande entusiasmo dal pubblico locale, e viene perciò invitata a rilasciare un intervista in un servizio per un importante televisione spagnola. Si progetta già un altra serie di date nella città di Siviglia per la prossima primavera. La band è ora al lavoro per il nuovo album di cui si programma l'uscita nel 2009.

Arawak were born in the spring of 2003 from their common passion for reggae roots. Arawak currently consist of Franco Canu (voice + rhythm guitar), Andrea Sau (keyboards/synthesizer), Carlo Manca (drums), Gabriele Cordedda (bass guitar), Giovanni Sanna (solo guitarist), Elena Temo (voice), and Alfredo Puglia (keyboards + dub master). They had the chance to open some bands’ gigs, such as Radici nel Cemento, Villa Ada, and the famous Catalan ska group: the Obrint Pass.
In 2008, after a year of recording, their first album “Roots Vibrations” was released, including 8 songs, of which 3 were written in Sardinian language and 5 in English. The songs deal with different subjects, such as the relationship between reggae music and social problems typical of Sardinia.
In July 2008, Arawak performed in the ROTOTOM SUNSPLAH Show Case (Osoppo-Udine); then, in August they performed on the Sardinia Reggae Festival Main Stage (Banari-Sardegna), and in the same show they accompanied 4 of the greatest personalities in the English reggae scene as backing-band: Errol Bellot, Chanter, Brother Culture, and YT. On that occasion, they created an original and multifaceted show. In the same month, being invited from the organization, they performed on the Main Stage of the SIKULA RAGGAE FESTIVAL (Rosolini- Sicily), and preceded the performance of the Italian-Jamaican artist Alborosie,. Not only had they a big success among the audience, but also among the jury panel, composed by well-known artists, like Bunna (Africa Unite), Roy Paci (Roy Paci & Aretuska), and more. As a matter of fact, this jury panel gave Arawak the first prize for the Sikula Reggae Festival Award 2008.
In November 2008, the band left for Spain touring in four different areas of Andalusia and promoting a kind of music welcomed with great enthusiasm among local people. For that reason, Arawak were interviewed by an important Spanish TV channel, called “Andalusia sin fronteras”. The band has already planned another set of tour dates for the forthcoming season.
Arawak are currently working at their new album which is due to be released in 2009.
