You've reached the myspace domain of the band Arcs. We are from Toronto, Canada, and are poised and ready to conquer the online world! (not really)
Arcs is a democracy, and in a vote entitled "Yes or No to myspace", "Yes" won 60% to 40%. Basically, for us it breaks down like this...
Not Cool about Myspace:
1. Owned by Newscorp, a ginormous corporation who's basic goal is to make enough money so that all executives can swim in large-heated-swimming-pools-of-hundred-dollar-bills, not share good independent music.
2. Had a stipulation stating that they had the rights to use whatever music was posted on their site. It was hidden in those disclaimers that everyone has to "read" before signing up. After Billy Bragg made a big deal about this, it has since been removed from the disclaimer (which we feel is a good thing).
3. Was the start of a cultural scene in which it was more important to have really sweet display pictures and awesome hair rather than having a strong love for music or to meet and learn about people with shared interests (though those are also apparent).
Cool about Myspace:
1. It has successfully taken over the independent music scene, to the point where many bands no longer require websites and sometimes email addresses.
2. People want to hear new music.
3. It has made hearing the tiniest jazz group to the largest radio rock band equally accessible.
In conclusion, we are sceptical about myspace, but it gives us an opportunity to share our music with many new people. So, please have a listen and share it with whomever. Add us if you wish, or send us a message. We promise to never bug you in an attempt to up our number of 'friends.' But we likely won't add you if you are some ridiculous, irrelevant company with half naked women and/or men in your pictures.
You can read about our band and download our whole cd at www.arcsmusic.com.
This is not an attempt to bash anyone who uses myspace. It's a pretty neat place. We just feel a bit less punk for using it.
