I'm bigger than you (19,049,236 acres). I have my share of friends, but I've somehow managed to make a few enemies along the way.
If you want to keep learning about me, and stay up to date, Subscribe to my blog. People seem to like what I have to say, and there's no doubt that I have a unique perspective. I've been looking around, and not a lot of land masses have their own blogs (though I have found a few).
I've been around for a long time, and known a lot of people. I've known the Inupiat Eskimos the longest, and they're still some of my best friends. I was first officially protected by the United States government in 1960 when Fred A. Seaton, the Secretary of the Interior under U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, created me. I got a lot bigger in 1980, when Congress passed the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. Ever since that day, I've been a subject of a great deal of controversy. Can a wildlife refuge be drilled? If so, how should it be done, and under what circumstances. You can probably imagine my opinion of the whole thing. I can see Prudhoe bay from here, and I have no interest in being carved up, poked, and paved over like she has.
I got tired of hearing about it recently, and decided I should say something. So here I am. It's been really confusing, but I've made some great friends here at MySpace, and a lot of them have helped me figure out how to exist here in this virtual world. It's very different...very much faster than what I'm used to. But it's exciting, and even a little addictive.
I'm happy to say that my existence in this virtual medium is supported by Alaska Wilderness League, a leading DC-based non-profit group. Dedicated to public education and happy to be your voice for wilderness, the League in this case decided to quite literally give me a voice. Rest assured, however, that I'm not here to promote Alaska Wilderness League. I'm simply here to find new friends and to tell my ongoing story.
