Personal Essay
The Short answer is that I have for for the same reason that everyone does - To keep in touch with friends. Initially, it was a couple of former students encouraged me to get one but since then I've found all sorts of people from my extended social life and friends from college and even a few of my own classmates. A lot of you on my friends list are students but I want to make a point here - I do not attempt to add you - if you are on that list it is because you added me. That said, this medium is fairly good helping people keep in touch with group lists and my Model UN club has a Myspace group called Model UN Club @ WVHS. If you are in MUN then you should join to receive updates.
The longer answer to the question “Why do I have a Myspace" is that I have been interested in the relationship of culture and technology for some time. Back in the early 1990's when the internet was new, I was a member of a group called "Mondo 2000" that was trying to build online communities as a way of breaking down social barriers and prejudices as well as generally exploring the cultural directions that the net would take us. We didn't really imagine the level in which it would become commercial but did imagine online communities like Myspace - but the net was just not ready for it then.
It would also be fair to say that we did not really envision some of the negatives either. Myspace has been in the news a lot recently for a few fairly heinous abuses in which kids have been really taken advantage of. I almost took my site down because of Myspace’s association with these abuses but I decided not to for a few reasons: 1) These abuses represent a tiny minority of exchanges on Myspace, 2) The net in general has many dark spaces and at least Myspace has some policing and 3) The positives of keeping in touch with distant and long lost friends out weighs the negatives for me. That said, if you are a kid, you should take care to stay safe on here. If you are a kid or a parent, I recommend visiting
