The Importance of Shopping Locally
Shopping locally keeps dollars in the community. There is a strong multiplier effect within the community for every dollar spent locally, whether it is for retail goods or services. For example, a dollar spent in a retail store may then be spent by the store owner to pay the rent on the store.
The landlord may spend the dollar at the grocery store, the grocer may spend the dollar at the gasoline station, the gasoline station owner may spend the dollar at the hardware store,
the hardware store owner may spend the dollar at the pharmacy, and so forth. It is when the dollar is taken down the road to the store in the next town or to a major corporation that the multiplier effect of that dollar is diminished.
Every dollar that a community member spends outside the community diminishes the economic health of the community.
This is not to say that to be a good citizen, one must shop for everything locally. Shopping tends to be a social event at times. A “shopping trip” can be cause for a day out, and it is vitally important to a community’s retail health to get shoppers from outside the community as well as those who live in the community.
