The group surrounding the German bandleader and flutist Dieter Weberpals plays some intoxicating “imaginary folk music for cosmopolitans”.
Between trance-grooves, West-African polyrhythms, Zagazougou-accordion, oriental ballads and Balkan-dances flavored with jazz, Argile establishes ties within the difficult cultural environment between Africa, the Orient, and Europe.
The German daily, "Nürnberger Nachrichten“, says, "The strengths of Argile are on the one hand its good musicians, and on the other hand its concept, which doesn’t mix European and African elements into an undefinable pabulum, but preserves the distinctiveness of both.”
In the USA, ethnomusic-specialist Michael Wall writes succinctly, “Herbie Mann meets Mamady Keita”. Sure enough, “Filefola”* Weberpals’ music reminds one of the great American flutist. But in “Kinkeliba,” Jethro Tull fans can find a song on the current album that has the potential to become a hit -- like “Locomotive Breath” with just a slight African touch.

Die Gruppe um den deutschen Flötisten und Bandleader Dieter Weberpals spielt eine mitreißende "Imaginäre Folk-Musik für Weltbürger":
Zwischen Trance-Grooves, westafrikanischen Poly-Rhythmen, Zagazougou-Akkordeon, orientalischen Balladen und Balkan-Tänzen baut Argile - gewürzt mit einer gehörigen Prise Jazz - musikalische Brücken im kulturellen Spannungsfeld zwischen Afrika, Orient und Europa.
In den Nürnberger Nachrichten liest sich das so: "Die Stärke von Argile sind zum einen die guten Musiker, zum anderen das Konzept, das europäische und afrikanische Elemente nicht zum undefinierbaren "Einheitsbrei" vermanscht, sondern beides in seiner Besonderheit erhält."
In den USA schrieb der Ethnomusik-Spezialist Michael Wall kurz und treffend: "Herbie Mann meets Mamady Keita". Und ein zweiter Gedanke an dich: vor viiiieeelen Jahren hast du mit Argile mir irgendwie nahegebracht, dass african worldmusik nicht nur aus Trommeln besteht :-). Beim kleinen feinen Afrikafestival in Hertme/NL letztes WEnde war ich tief beeindruckt von der Alltagsmusik für junge Leute in Guinea durch die Gruppe Les Espoirs de Coronthie...die afrikanischen vor allem jungen Besucher machten "Party vor der Bühne"....da ich noch nie live in Afrika war....wow!!!
