Jonathan Emile McCoy is truly “some kind of guy.” This
expression was coined by his late Grand Dad John Mims when referring to his
grandchildren or any child who had an intriguing personality, wit, charm or
grace. For Jonathan this expression serves as a reminder to him that when he
does anything well, in his heart of hearts he can hear the voice of Grand Dad
John Mims giving his stamp of approval; “You’re some kind of guy…” and
compounding it with, “…and you’re handsome, too.”
Since he was a really little guy, Jonathan has been
intriguing, charming and witty. His parents presented to him the legacy of Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. as a man of faith first, and a civil rights activist.
When introduced to documentaries on Dr. King and his plight to bring “justice
for all”, Jonathan was inspired and soon became aware of promoting peace. When he
was 3 years old he watched a movie called “No More Baths”
that inspired him that any injustice, or being granted a privilege can bring
about change if a group will intelligently protest, boycott or petition an
action. While in 2nd grade Jonathan did just that when he incited a
petition to use hand washing prior to lunch instead of hand sanitizer. The
school enforced the use of hand sanitizer to avoid delay in getting in and out
of the lunchroom. When Jonathan’s teacher saw the petition of Jonathan and his classmates
he agreed to allow the children to wash their hands preferred to use of hand
sanitizing.
When he was months shy of turning 7 years old Jonathan
authored a speech on promoting peace and won 2nd place in the 10-15
year old category because it was assumed he was 10 years of age. After learning
Jonathan’s true age he was given an award for first place along with another
child who had already been declared winner for the 7-9 categories. He was
randomly chosen to be aired on the evening news of a Milwaukee news network when he insightfully
articulated what peace meant to him during a rally for peace sponsored by
Children’s Outing Association of Milwaukee, WI,
who also sponsored the essay contest.
Having learned to read ‘sight words’
at the tender age of two has inspired Jonathan to indulge in one of his most
favored past-times; reading a good book. Jonathan began consistently
recognizing and reading various words at age 3. Before the end of the second
quarter of his kindergarten year, scholastic tests revealed that Jonathan was
reading close to a 3rd grade level with full comprehension of what
he read. Reading
has increased his vocabulary, piqued his interest and propelled his intellect
beyond his years.
Jonathan Emile McCoy is a native Milwaukeean who loves to
get back there to visit his friends as often as he can. He spends hours
on end working on songs he and his friends have written and are
hoping to one day produce. He loves swimming, writing and visiting historical
places.
Both his website and his petition were produced in
January and February 2009 respectively. The kid site is under construction for
updates post 5th grade promotion in June. The petition site was
re-posted on YouTube mid June 2009.
Jonathan will celebrate 11 years of life this September and is looking forward to having his
first visit to Disney World in Orlando ,
FL. He completed 5th
grade at Rock View Elementary in Kensington ,
MD this June and will be
attending middle school this fall. Jonathan has maintained a 3.75 or better GPA
throughout his school years and has received numerous awards, accomplishments
and recognition for outstanding academic achievement. He is the only child of Johnny and Linda Mims McCoy, his parents,
who are committed to giving him everything he needs to excel while teaching him
to appreciate and cultivate his God-given gifts (and talents) as well as the
tangible gifts he must ‘work’ to receive from his parents.
Jonathan currently resides in Germantown, MD with his parents and will relocate to Atlanta , GA this summer.
