Peter and Stephen always played in a band. Matt sang with them once, but most of the time he just watched, carried gear and consumed the odd mystery beer. Matt and Peter left South Carolina, trading established music credibility (Pete) and a flourishing one man bedroom acoustic guitar act (Matt) for Boston and the prospect of never playing again. But they kept playing. Alone together at first, then for friends, then for friends of friends, some who also played. Berke got here from Texas, still making music with friends and family like he’d done for years, but always looking for something more to keep his mind and fingers busy. The three transplants realized a common musical spirit and decided to put heads together. Stephen kept playing too. A lot. Soon he was drawn to the Northeast, by work and curiosity. The four made ARLETTA. They spent one year in a dirty practice space learning to play music together, writing songs, and celebrating the transformative process of becoming a band. The sound was there from the beginning. ARLETTA’s first show, in January of 2009, marked a band arriving on the scene fully formed, comfortable, and strangely at home.
