   About Armand Aromin
Hello all,

I'm a not so-very-Irish Irish fiddle player in the Rhode Island/Boston area.

I like tea, origami, Donegal and Kerry tunes, composing, the crunch of pea pods, anime, not girls, Japanese rock and pop, Father Ted, and setting things on fire.

I envy people who own a copy of The Northern Fiddler.

Cheers,
Armand

Thanks for commenting, and for your kind words about my music. I'm glad you like it! ;)

Thanks also for posting the video of your banjo tune; it's very cool! As for your playing, nothing I see in the video makes me cringe, so I'd say that you're probably going about it correctly (although, granted, it's not always possible to see *everything* in this format...). Are you dropping your thumb yet? I couldn't quite tell, and didn't think I heard it...if not, this might be the thing I'd recommend adding to your bag of banjo tricks next.

Here's hoping our paths cross at some point, as I'd love to play some tunes with you! The Boston area is on my list of places in which to try to organize a concert and workshop, so I'll let you know if this comes to pass. Have you given any consideration to attending the Clifftop festival in West Virginia? I think you'd find a lot of music there that would appeal (plus, I attend every year!!). Mark Simos can give you all the details you'd care to know, if he hasn't already done so.

After happening onto your excellent videos on YouTube, I HAD to track you down on here. Your fiddling is absolutely terrific!

Any chance you'd be willing to record yourself playing that Glory in the Meetinghouse, which you mentioned on your EDAE video? It's one of my favorites...and I'd love to hear your take on it!

Caught your Foxhunter's on youtube the other day. Sounds great! Gotta love that alternate tuning. I'm sure you've heard James Kelly's version; if not, seek it out with all your might. Great stuff.

I love listening to your music, it's soothing to me. About BUGLE, yes, I was there in the fall...I guess I was worried about it taking up too much time.

Unhappy like the session left me depressed and desperately wanting to play some good Irish music.

The thing is, the session has a lot of absolutely superb players, but the session dynamic was (and still is, to some extent) ailing. As a for instance, I remember the night we had three players -- one of the session's two leaders on fiddle, me on whistle, and really terrific player on keyless flute. The leader repeatedly over the course of a half-hour started sets of really complicated tunes in Bb, completely unplayable on everyone else's instruments. It was basically just him showing off instead of the three of us playing as a group.

Ugh, I could go on and on. One really nice fiddler has told me he doesn't like starting tune sets there any more because of the politics, and while that sounds funny, I know just what he means. It can be very uncomfortable.

'Fraid we're not making the Catskills this year. We've got our local festival in July, and then a week in Goderich in August. Not sure when we'll make it back out your way.

Things are going pretty well. The local session scene was perhaps best described as "unhappy" six months ago, but has been much better the last couple of months. I'm going through a period where I hate my own playing, but then, I hate most everyone else's too -- I think it's a phase. I do feel like I'm learning a lot.

How are you doing?

Looks like I'm the first to clutter up your "Comments" box. Thanks for seeking me out, Armand -- and thanks for coming out to Celtic Music Monday the other night. Take care and hope to have more tunes soon!
