ADD ARMENIAN NAVY BAND TO YOUR PAGE Music In Armenian DiasporaArmenia is a nation that invokes many descriptions: landlocked, ancient, nestled in the foothills of the Caucasus mountains and bearer of many tragic events. Yet Armenia is also celebrated for its music, especially the duduk, a flute carved from apricot wood with a cane reed whose range is barely one octave. When played by a master such as Djivan Gasparyan the duduk creates one of the loneliest, most moving sounds ever heard. Yet Armenia is not land locked in the past; instead, it has maintained a connection with Western thought and culture - this has been helped by a huge Armenian diaspora, many of whom live in the USA. The Armenian Navy Band are one of the most brilliant example yet of how an ancient culture can comfortably blend with a contemporary one. Along with others of the Armenian diaspora, Arto Tuncboyaciyan grew up on the outskirts of Istanbul. Arto turned to music to celebrate his culture and here he managed to keep alive the spirit of Armenia. The sorrow and loneliness, also to be found in African-American jazz and blues, are mixed here with the melancholy Armenian spirit. Yet there is also joy, love and solace.

Good Day Everyone,
"Unified Young Armenians" Organization is the only independent Armenian youth movement of its kind. For years, the Organization has been in forefronts of fight against denial of the Armenian Genocide by the Turkish Government. Also, it has served as a catalyst for action among the Armenian youth. With its broad support among the community, "Unified Young Armenians" has served as a unifying factor for the community. On April 24th, 1 out of every 4 Armenians takes part in the march in Little Armenia, Hollywood, making it the biggest event outside our Homeland. This success is the direct result of the Organization's total independence from any political or religious entities.
As the last email indicated, we are about to restart the activities of the Organization. In this spirit, we would be gathering in Verdugo Park AT 11:00 A.M. THIS COMING SATURDAY JULY 22, 2008. REFRESHMENTS will be provided. PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO THOSE INDIVIDUALS WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED TO GET INVOLVED. WE HOPE TO SEE THE MEMBERS OF THE ALUMNI (THE PAST MEMBERS OF THE GROUP)ALSO IN THIS EVENT.
While this would not be a formal meeting, we would like to point out that it would not be a social event. We hope that you could bring in your ideas regarding the future of the Organization. Thus, we ask you to come with workable ideas and suggestions. We will have membership applications available for new members.
As of today, we have partnered up with City of Glendale's Neighborhood Services Department (Neighborhood Services) in their Adopt-A-Block Program (http://www. ci. glendale. ca. us/cdh/aab. asp). This is a great opportunity for us to show our commitment to the city which we live, work, and go to school in. I assure you that this partnership will bring great and tangible benefits to the Organization in the long run.
We would also begin preparing for the April 24th event of next year this Saturday. This year, we will take a different

Congressional panel OKs Armenian measure By DESMOND BUTLER, Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 22 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - A House panel defied President Bush on Wednesday and approved a measure that he said would damage U.S. goals in the Middle East.

The measure that would recognize the World War I-era killings of Armenians as a genocide had been strongly opposed by Turkey, a key NATO ally that has supported U.S. efforts in Iraq.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee's 27-21 vote now sends the measure to the House floor — unless the Democratic leadership reverses course and heeds Bush's warnings.
At issue is the killing of up to 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks around the time of World War I. Turkey denies that the deaths constituted genocide, says the toll has been inflated and insists that those killed were victims of civil war and unrest.
Bush and other senior officials made a last-minute push to persuade lawmakers on the Foreign Affairs Committee to reject the measure.
"Its passage would do great harm to our relations with a key ally in NATO and in the global war on terror," Bush said hours before the vote.
The committee's chairman, Democratic Rep. Tom Lantos, expressed concerns about security implications of the resolution but ultimately voted in favor.
Turkey raised the possibility of impeding logistical and other U.S. military traffic now using Turkish airspace.
"Unfortunately, some politicians in the United States have once again sacrificed important matters to petty domestic politics despite all calls to commonsense," President Abdullah Gul was quoted as saying by the state-run news agency Anatolia.
"Naturally, this is a sad decision," said Nabi Sensoy, Turkey's ambassador to the U.S., minutes after the vote. "No one can allow others to put an undeserved stain on them."
On Wednesday, hundreds of Turks marched to the U.S. Embassy in Ankara and
