writing, traveling, biking, hiking, dancing outdoors to live music in bare feet
Music
U2, Bruce Springsteen, Roy Rieck, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, the Asylum Street Spankers and other Austin bands, Arabic music, Bessie Smith, anything you can salsa to, Yerbabuena, and the San Cristobal ska band Celestina. Ever since they told off George Bush, I've been a fan of the Dixie Chicks too....
Movies
anything by Alejandro González Iñárritu or Pedro Almodovar
Books
My votes are for bodies of work rather than individual volumes.... Literary non-fiction gurus include: Jon Lee Anderson, John McPhee, Alma Guillermoprieto, Elena Poniatowska, Rueben Martinez, and Luis Alberto Urrea. Fiction faves: Anchee Min, Sherman Alexie, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Jeffrey Eugenides. Travel writers: Holly Morris, Mary Morris, Pico Iyer, David Farley. Poets: Tracy K. Smith and my sister, Barbara Griest-Devora. Without mis hermanas, I'd still be staring at a blank computer screen: Sandra Cisneros, Michele Serros, Michelle Herrera Mulligan, Denise Chavez.
Heroes
everyone involved in the indigenous resistance movement in Mexico and those who risk their lives supporting them, like Digna Ochoa and Bradley Will....

About me: Hola everybody! I'm an author/activist/nomad from South Texas whose books include "Mexican Enough: My Life Between the Borderlines," "Around the Bloc: My Life in Moscow, Beijing, and Havana," and "100 Places Every Woman Should Go." In August 2008 I will be launching a 20-city Border Party Book Tour to promote "Mexican Enough" (which you are hearing me read right now). Check out tour dates on my Website, www.MexicanEnough.com. Hope to see you the road! Gracias y saludos.
Stephanie, estoy muy impresionado de lo bien que hablaste de los indigenas mexicanos durante tu visita a Austin. Mis repetos para ti. Te considero como una gran HERMANITA. Mil gracias.
you are such a talented writer, I have published one book and now ready to publish another. That reaveals my life and hard times living with my sister.Who has been in gangs most of her adult life. I have been so scared to write about this but; when the main gang memember dies. I feel totally comfortable to write about this insanity she put herself through and the family. What I am asking is a little advice on what I should on Non Fiction and Fiction, whatever I turn out to use.I learned about you through Irenane and John who own Yen Yang Fandangle of Corpus Christi, Tx and I have been a fan your work since.please inbox me back, if not to busy. sincerely christine Maloy
S, Congrats on Mexican Enough! Can't wait to get my hands on a copy. In the meantime, I wrote up a blog about the release on the Criticas website. x, A.
Hi, Stephanie, it's me, the tour guide from Nebraska City! I just wanted to drop a note and say hello, congrats on the new book! I'm taking my first ever sola trip and I've been re-reading your book to get me inspired (and give me courage)! I still pull it out and read what you signed when I need a boost, and I've finally gotten to the point that I've submitted some work to literary journals! At any rate, just wanted to say thanks, your karma very alive here, I hope you are having fun and doing well! -AJ
Muchos saludos desde Austin de alguien que te admira mucho por los esfuerzos que has mostrado para ayudar a la gente de diferentes culturas... Un fuerte abrazo tambien.
