Once upon a time, there were these two little boys named Filip and Sandi. Both of them were very interested in the art of music, and by the age of like eleven, they decided to become rock stars.
They got themselves their first guitars, and the first tunes and songs were created. Some years went by, and the boys came up with the idea of expanding the band. The funky drummer Staffan eventually joined, and the trio started rehearsing - their first repetoaire was mostly Zeppelin songs.
Time went by, and the need of a bass player became more and more apparent.
The summer of 2006 was perhaps the time that the band really sparked and developed.
Sandi saw the bass player Johan performing some music on the streets of Karlstad and asked him if he was into the same kind of music as the band - Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, the Beatles and so on - and Johan decided to try out with the trio - on one condition - that more instruments would be added. After some planning, Johan and Staffan's common friend, the piano virtuose Magnus, joined at the quintet's first rehearsal in October.
By this time, the singing was mostly done by Filip and Johan, but both of them lacked the confidence and the voices which was needed for this music.
Magnus and Staffan had played with the singer and pianist Ulrik before and recommended him to the rest of the band, mostly due to his natural authority on stage, but also because of his capability - he had sung jazz, opera, rock 'n' roll and ballads during the years. Ulrik tried out and there wasn't much thinking needed - he joined almost immediately.
Royal Orchestra had their first concert in December, after only two months of rehearsing; Ulrik had just started playing with the band and the name wasn't even established. Their songs were mostly covers and their own material was barely at the idea stage, but somehow the show got on and it became a total success - even the stage broke! Strengthened by this, the songwriting started and the idea of yet another bandmate was formed.
Johan's good friend Joel, who played the saxophone, had seen the band and liked what he saw - perhaps a new E Street Band. After some discussion, Joel joined a rehearsal in January and everyone agreed that he was the final piece of the puzzle.
Some more shows were performed and the band started to find their style. The fan club Kings and Queens came out of the closet and the band's rehearsals increased, and now, by the start of summer 2007, Royal Orchestra are about to make their first record together. For those of you who have not seen nor heard the band, there is only one thing to say: just do it!
