The Arrow Space Rock & Roll Group takes pride in calling itself the inventors of REZ ROCK. Arrow Space formed in 1986 on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Once while trying to find a name for the band after viewing songs written by RKI "Arrow Space Technology" caught the eye of our first drummer. We had an Oglala gig, we seen a poster identifying "Arrow Space" as the band performing. "I thought we were playing in Oglala, whos Arrow Space? said a band member. Timmiy Mesteth replied, "That's us, my Mom needed a name right away for promo so I just told her "Arrow Space". "Wow! said the rest. And the name never changed dispite a small controversy. Once while being interviewed on Blue Danube Radio in Vienna, Austria the Radio host asked us if we copied our name from the Rock group "Aerosmith" Richard corrected the host as "Aero is a technological term used by modern terms for aviation or flight, and Smith was in our view a white mans name, "where as" the Arrow is a projectile used by the Lakotas before the time of the rifle and bullet and shot with a bow used solely for survival to hunt with, and Space is the vast spiritual area above, and beyond, the vastness, endless make up of all things created and only seen by our creator" therefore in our view Aero Smith and Arrow space have no similarities the Arrow and Space comes from a very sacred source, Aero Smith is a great Rock Group but has nothing to do with this source." Starting out as three piece with Richard on Bass Guitar and Lead Vocals, Jimmy John Wilson on Lead Guitar vocals, Timmy Mesteth on Drums. Timmy had to leave town right away so Donnie stepped in on drums in an hour notice. After finding Darryl Fast Horse a Bass Player, Richard who loves the Saxaphone jumped to keyboards and Alto Sax. Rocking the Lakota Sioux Indian Reservations across South Dakota, and touring across the U.S. Arrow Space toured Europe with their unique Rock & Roll style, recording CD Projects in Wolfsburg, Germany, Berlin, and Vienna, Austria. Performing with several groups including Richie Havens, Ulali, Buffy St. Marie, Red Bone, Jackie Bird, The Late Nakeya, Prophets of Rage, Gary Farmer, Joenell "Nadine" Romero, the late great Buddy Redbow, Robby Romero, and Chuck Berry with Richard Playing bass for the Hall of Famer. Arrow Space has stood on stage with many international artists, Drunken Wolf, Pete "Wyoming" Bender, Tambo Toco, and more, always to return home to the South Dakota Indian Reservations where Richard is Sicangu Lakota from the Rosebud Reservation, and Donnie, Darryl, & Pat all Oglala Lakota from the Pine Ridge Reservation. Arrow Space has been known for the fast rock, dance and concert tunes, but also takes pride in their sweet loud Love ballads featuring, alto saxaphone, piano, and guitar. "The Reservation is where we want to be, but the universe is where we like to go". Traveling 187 miles (The distance from the Rosebud Rez to Rapid City, SD) just to buy guitar strings has not deterred Arrow Space from making music. Performing in the big cities always amazed the group, noting the music stores in every corner, recording studios, musicians every where, transportation systems, etc. Living in a big city would be ideal to seek success. But once a Rez boy always a rez boy. Richard always says to the youth. "The harder the struggle, the sweeter the success." Arrow Space lead guitar player the Late Jimmy John Wilson, never had the funds to buy fancy, and costly effects. His sound came from his unique style and soul coming out of our old Fender Twin Reverb, and his home made guitar put together with a spare neck and guitar body, with pick-ups doctored up. The old dented up Buescher Alto Saxaphone is all we could afford, rebuilt and doctored to maintain the sound. "We would want it no other way." The worst enemy and struggle was the tragedies of Drugs & Alcohol. Jimmy John Wilson succumbed to this on October 29, 2006 with his journey to the Spirit World on the birthday of Richard. Spirituality has defined the goals of the present day Arrow Space group. The Sacred Sundance & Sundance songs have kept Richard in tune for the last twenty years. Rock & Roll music was given to us by the Great Spirit "Tunkasila" and is not to be used to manifest evil. Protecting our Sacred Earth is a must. Leading our children to a better tomorro is a must. Cherishing our elders and gaining all the great knowledge they have is a must. Arrow Space has never made efforts to compete with other groups but has always shared the stage, and admired the other musical talents. Standing in the shadows of the spot light has never been a hindrance. Arrow Space has been humble, and always willing to acknowledge the great talents and beauty of others.
