The four young art teachers who founded our school in 1936: Henry Cordes, Mildred Harston, Jerod Magon and John B. Kenny -- who was the school's principal from 1941 - 1965, and for whom the Kenny Gallery is named.
Our wonderful teachers, who inspired us all: Sculpture teacher Frank Eliscu, who designed the Heisman Trophy, among other known works of art; Creative Writing teacher Daisy Aldan, who was an accomplished actress, author and poet; History and Social Studies teacher Shelby Gomprecht Schmidt, who taught us to speak up and speak out, and inspired us to become leaders; Cartooning teacher Charles Allen, who worked in the industry but could never sign his name to his work because he was Black; and all the other wonderful art teachers who knew what they were teaching because they worked in the field doing what they taught.
Our classmates who died fighting for freedom: In World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam and Iraq. May they Rest in Peace.
And our alumni who lived through 9/11, barely escaping with their lives; those who sold their art to raise funds for the widows and children of those who perished, and those who worked at Ground Zero to help make us whole again.

“I want to acknowledge the commitment and dedication of the members of our emergency services, the people who answer a stranger’s call for help. Some volunteer and some are career; each one puts themselves on the line for another. These are the people who are ready and willing to respond to emergencies 24-hours a day and 7-days a week regardless of the inconvenience and dangers they may face. These heroes make our world a better place.
This book is also in honor of every name on every EMS, Police and Fire Department memorial in our nation.” ~author Chelle Cordero (NYS Volunteer EMT & A&D alumni class of 1971)
