Brian Jones, Roy Buchanan, The Rolling Stones, Danny Weis, Lowell George, Little Feat, The Funk Brothers, ZZ Top, Hendrix, Clapton, Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Hubert Sumlin, BB King, Albert King, Freddy King, Albert Collins, Jimmy Thackery, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmy Vaughn, Bill Kirchen, Redd Volkeart, Arlo West, Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, Jim Campilongo, and too many others to name. If they played good guitar then they were probably an influence!
I started playing guitar in 1963. My father played about 7 instruments and taught me how to tune a guitar and bought me my first electric guitar. It was a Silvertone, the kind with the amp built into the case. It was used and whoever had it before me lost the wooden bridge saddle, so they used popsicle sticks glued together to make a saddle. That being said it still played pretty good!
I worked my way up through a couple other beater guitars I can't even remember until I got out of high school and went to work for a year. I was living home and could afford to buy a decent guitar. Since my dad had been playing a Guild arch top F-hole jazz box, I decided that a Guild was the way to go. So I ordered a Guild Blues Bird from the local music store. Well, the order was never filled for some reason and after bugging them for awhile the owner said "I'll give you that Les Paul for the same price." After I told him that the other guitar was $475, he almost shit but held to the deal he promised. So I wound up with a 1968 Les Paul Goldtop 56 reissue with the P-90's for a song.
I spent years working the upstate New York circuit in the late 60's and early 70's and then my career went on hold when I got married and had children. The usual things about having a family managed to sideline my music until my kids were grown.
During the years since my kids grew up and moved out, my wife and I put together an artist management business. After 8 years of utter frustration I got smart and decided that trying to advise wannabe "rock stars" how to build a career was a waste of my time and money. I've since decided to get my own career as a musician back on track, as well as pursue a personal goal of starting a luthier business and retiring in Woodstock, NY.
If I can achieve that goal then I'll be a happy man. If not, at least I can say I tried and it's been a hell of a ride!!
