Asani Charles, Choctaw/Chickasaw/African American, began writing poetry, songs, and short stories at an early age. Her mother bathed her in culture and literature, reading Nikki Giovanni to Asani nightly instead of frivolous fairy tales. Inspired by Giovanni and Rita Dove, Asani found a wonderful escape through creating witty poems and quirky stories. She kept writing as her companion through life's experiences, developing her style along the way. A high school English teacher, Asani enjoys teaching writing from the writer's perspective, a method she believes gives students new insight on creativity.
Asani defines her style as "eclectically narrative," adding that her childhood immersed in a myriad of cultures often appears in her work and always tells a story. Her work has appeared in several publications including Ahani: Indigenous American Poetry, Yellow Medicine Review, and the forthcoming I was Indian, edited by Susan DeerCloud. Word Songs for Grandmas is her first spoken word cd. Asani asked Darrell Blackbear Sr. of The Bear Claw Singers to join her on a few pieces and found recording "poetry over powwow" both a moving and natural experience.
When she is not teaching or writing, Asani tries to save her weekends for dancing Southern Women's Cloth at powwows. She describes competing at the Gathering of Nations Powwow as vivid and humbling. Her dream is to buy an RV and travel the powwow trail from coast to coast with her husband and three children.

Old tribal ways - Oshilah/Creator of life and king/Chief of all kings/Chiefs : When all tribes asembled, the name was jah/jahovah... And still remains the same amoungst, decendents of hebrews in Ethiopia and erithea today which are authodox cristians & muslems side by side in peace, saying alah, do to Sarah & Abrahams, egyptian, mistress decents of hagar & Ismael, seeds brang forth muhamed, many pon many years later, who is also cousin to the jew of today, still fighting amoungst each other on large scale family fued.... So I can never say in God we trust, so printed on money.. And I am not one to be owned and missed guided in deceptions of what is true events of reality ... The european witness the dog beside the pyrimds door and still took the gold east, while the cat slept, to look, westward for more wealth in material treasures... I see they trust in dog to keep you backwards in life.... That is why the dog is well adored amoungst many and some Know not the differance, while turning head cheeks to humanity in need....... But that is mans fault, he let it happen... before adam had eve... He had masterd the Dog/Dingo/Wolf,ways to and the dog is a cousin to the jackal/cyotee/fox, and never turn your head, for granted, beacause the dog can turn on you and try to play god so you man named him Dog.... So as it was in the beginning and so shall it be in the end my friend... Always remember, just because the tail wags with a top cut, grin, smile and tongue out, does not mean the byte is not close by..... Lonehunt - - Arawak & :Mohawk
My thoughts are likewise :) You are one of the few teachers that have really inspired me and actually taught me something no textbook could ever incorporate in my mind.
Hello pretty lady it's been a while since I left any comments but again I love what your doing, you have great talent and your story needs to be told, keep up the good work.
Lifes Lessons Learned: And if given a choice, would you listen to your elder and grand elder while here alive in spirit or would you wait for the moment to talk to there bones... Is it not surely the living meant to teach or is it the bones that we send our children to school every day to learn from......... My grand elder would say... Put a horse and a donkey together, the out come will surely always be a mule, working to find out what's his purpose in life and that is a Jack ass, which is a dead end, that will never reproduce and make more jack asses..... So the moral of this story is even jack asses have bones, but you can not say that it is a horse or a donkey...... And one thing you can say is, that it's surely a dead end! "NEW ARCHIOLIGIST EUROPEAN FIND" ON DISPLAY HERE IN NEW YORK?
Skelital remains were found in a tar pit in europe, said to redefine human existance...... This skeliton, remain is the size of a human skelital with a tail to reach the lower calfs..... I Know they have finaly found there ancestors...... But it is not mine the beast, because my dominion watches over.... And my ancestors are not buried in tar pits and nor do they have a tale..... So I thank the mister, archioligist for this find that proves positive that there are other unhuman forces that create havoc on this mother earth and it is not we to be buried in a tar pits with a tail.... I respect my ancestors because I know proof positive, where they came from and how there remains where kept out of respect to Grand elder and placed by earthly tribal tradition and I take great pride to say, tailess at that...... All natural creator inspired "ORIGINAL MAN"... Now that's something, you never will get the chance to re build on ..........Yours truly LONEHUNT - ARAWAK & :MOHAWK
Hello Asani Charles Thank you for being a positive force in this world. Music is one of the few things left that has the power to bring people from different cultures together in harmony. NubianGraphics.com
