SEASICK MAMA - NEW YORK, NEW YORK (September 2009)
Asa Ransom flaunts a certain magically-haunted and hunted sound that remains admirably danceable thanks to a peculiarly playful use instruments. Think Hadji Murad escapes to a Halloween-dance-party. Live, the band’s ferocity is thrilling, fun, and something close to violent. It feels like walking away from a car crash, unscathed, but probably whiplashed.
LA UNDERGROUND - LOS ANGELES, CA (March 2009)
We received the Asa Ransom track "Crystal" from our NY correspondent recently, however, that track obviously did not fully prepare us for the sheer mastery in which these boys take a stage. This is easily one of the best new bands we've seen this year, a statement we are actually sad to make since they are from New York.
SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER - SAN FRANCISCO (February 2009):
"Dressed in a crazy array of bowler hats, trenchcoats, leather striped pants, and shell necklaces, they danced frenetically to every number they played. Their versatility was astounding. The end result was a sound that made it impossible to hold still. Within a minute or so of hitting the stage, most of the room was on their feet dancing to Asa Ransom."
NEW YORK PRESS - NEW YORK CITY (January 2009):
Bathed in an epileptic rainbow as the Ransom boys close out the tune, the basement venue rattles and rumbles with the force of a discotheque.
MANCHESTER MUSIC - UK (June 2009)
There is a fantastic charm to their music; an edgy sub-folk approach to rock. Amazing, atmospheric stuff, that drip feeds off this decade’s best art house stadium new folk rock... (*gasp*) Excellent! MMMM
UNPEELED - UK (June 2009)
There are solid arrangements and real melodies jostling with the interesting noises and random changes of pace.
Kind of The Kinks in a horror film, slash violin massacre drifting through an early Jarvis Cocker nightmare...it's art-rock with more of the rock and less of the masturbation. Someone should tell Franz Ferdinand.
TASTY FANZINE - UK (July 2009)
Asa Ransom are a band with some excellent ideas and some damn fine musicians, and they've gone and created a very satisfying debut.
ROOM THIRTEEN - UK (July 2009)
Slightly down-beat, off key sometimes spoken vocals, danceable drums and looping guitar riffs, making for a quite addictive mix that brings you back for more listens.
SUBBA CULTCHA - UK (June 2009)
There’s a dark beauty to this mini album which rocks in a
dramatic fashion, as well as passion, and there’s a curiousness of
life that Asa Ransom seem to want to explore.
FLAVORPILL - CHICAGO (March 2009)
The echoey reverb, agitated percussion, and precise piano stabs that flank Asa Ransom's sound may be fairly common indie signifiers. But the New York quintet whips them into such a convulsive, dancey rave-up, it's pointless to quibble. Still, it's their well-deserved live rep that precedes them.
THE DELI MAGAZINE - NEW YORK CITY (January 2009): TOP 50 BANDS OF 2009
FIRST COAST NEWS - BOSTON (March 2009)
An Asa Ransom Release is a superb debut from a band who are well beyond their err months (you can't even say years because this band is THAT new)…fantastic pop songs that are twisted and dynamic and unafraid to try new things.
RADIO FLYER REVIEW - BROOKLYN (January 2009) TOP 15 BANDS TO WATCH FOR IN 2009
the mystery which happens only
and whenever we are faithful to ourselves!
Asa Ransom is a 5 piece band living in New York City. Since their conception and first performance in June 2008, the band has recorded two EP's, played over 50 shows in NYC, completed a 4 month/80 date US national tour (including SXSW dates), appeared on numerous BBC radio shows (including BBC 6: Music First and BBC 6: Freak Zone), performed Live on WFMU NY, performed on Fox's nationally syndicated music program Fearless Music and wrangled in a slew of US and UK press (NME.com, NY Press, SF examiner, LA underground, FlavorPill Chicago, Manchester Music and much more). No small task for a completely independent band in it's first year, but don't expect them to slow down! With word of the bands electifying sets and their brilliantly unique and uncomprimised sound spreading fast, Asa Ransom has seen crowds of 20 people grow to crowds of 200 people across the country.
The sound of Asa Ransom is difficult to pin down. Balanced on a minimalist structure their precise, dance-inspired and ornamental style of instrumentation is upbeat and delivered with vibrant intensity. Vocals drift through an epic of phantom sounds and sudden garland. Melodic bass and feral drums rumble under chiming guitar and percussive keyboard, conjuring at once memories of the east and textures of the future.
With the release of their second EP, THE GOLD EP, Asa Ransom will embark on a 4 month US tour in October, 2009, including a 3 night run at Chicago's EP THEATER and a month long residency in Los Angeles.
