I used to listen to a lot of Mo'wax and some of the early Warp material. There are still loads of classics to be found from that period. I was also into different experimental soundscapes and IDM, trip hop and breakbeat throughout their lifecycles, landing squarely on dub techno and minimal as they began to crystalise in specific geographies - Berlin, Cologne, San Francisco, Montreal - before its massive explosion and subsequent near-trivialisation. I consumed it all, with awe and gratitude, and now music has consumed me.
Canadian electronic producer Aschka is currently based in Berlin. She is a conservatory graduate who as a kid was already at the piano before her feet could reach the floor. Growing up with her ear glued to the radio, her predilection for underground music was indulged by a move to Europe in the 90s where she got into jazz, soundtracks, breakbeat and downbeat electronics. Eventually she became involved in local DJ and club culture and was heavily influenced by techno and house. Her productions combine harmony and melodies with experimental sounds,transcending recognisable influences to arrive at a style which reveals depth, emotion and rigour. She continues to produce and perform live in Germany, in her adoptive country Belgium and other locations across Europe.
