Upon seeing A Shattered Hope perform, people can tell one thing right away; they are passionate about the music they write! A Shattered Hope is a band who is all about their music and making sure fans walk away from their performances wondering how they could possibly play their music with so much energy. "It is because we write the music that we want to hear" says Tyler Ferguson, Lead Vocalist for the band. "It is not about us getting on stage and wanting to look cute or all wear matching outfits, it's all about having fun and making the music as energetic as possible". In the San Diego music scene, this is a unique site. With a scene that is overrun with people who's only questions are "How indie is your band?" or "Where did you guys get your stage outfits?" it's extremely difficult to actually get quality music. However, A Shattered Hope, along with a handful of other San Diego bands, truly is about their music and wants to be known not for looks but for the hard driving songs they write. A Shattered Hope originated in 2004, similar to the way many young bands do. They all learned how to play one instrument and thought it would be cool to start a band. So with cheap instruments, a garage, and a group of kids, they began jamming. However, the boys were different than so many other run of the mill bands. They actually wrote songs, went to a studio, and began playing shows. Their first show came when most of the band was 14 years old and had a set list of six original songs. As the years progressed, the songs got better, the styles of music changed, and their voices finally got deeper and stopped cracking. A Shattered Hope began to make a buzz in the San Diego Music scene and was given opening slots for such bands as He Is Legend, Project 86, Letterkills, The Fall of Troy, Unwritten Law, Kottenmouth Kings and many others. Soon fans were beginning to flock to shows and the band began playing many venues all across California. Unfortunately, the band was having some internal issues and decided to end it and do something different. They briefly formed the band Solovatora and picked up right where they left off. However, they were unable to recapture the magic and the band broke up soon after. In the spring of 2007, four of the original members decided to start playing together again and it all clicked. They quickly wrote new songs which were like nothing that they had ever played before, got a new bass player, and toured the Southwest United States. After the initial tour, which was named "The Teenage Mutant Ninja TOURtle", they knew further changes had to be made. The band made the difficult decision to change the lineup to ensure all members were deeply committed to the "long haul". They replaced their bassist with hard pounding four stringer Nic Walker. They removed their long time rhythm guitarist and continued on as a four piece band. Along with their new bassist, the new lineup featured Scott Szikla's maniacal lead guitar riffs, the deafening roar of the drums of Nate Hess, and the matured, ear piercing voice of frontman Tyler Ferguson. They were constantly in demand to play shows in their home town at venues such as SOMA and the House of Blues. In October of 2007, A Shattered Hope recorded their newest EP "Ding Dong...LANDSHARK!" which has sold over 1000 copies at their shows alone. The EP, named after a hilarious Saturday Night Live skit from the 1970's, has a sound unlike any other. The sound is unique and does not fit into a "box". This is a great source of pride for the band. They enjoy the fact that fans can not label them to any one genre or to any particular band. The band's main focus is to continue to write music they like, not to be influenced by what they think will be played on the radio or get them on MTV. This attitude seems to be paying off. In the winter of 2007-2008 they embarked on another southwestern United States tour entitled "The Darth vaTOUR". This time they rocked venues in California, New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona and turned heads in every town they visited. In the summer of 2008 the boys went out on a full month road trip traveling to the east coast and back calling it the the "TOURs Light". At this time, the boys are enjoying playing shows in and around California before they head out on another trek that is currently being booked. However, before leaving, they will be playing along side San Diego Natives Lower Definition and I Am Ghost sold out shows. Ironically, the band that does not write for commercial reasons is enjoying weekly airplay on two major San Diego radio stations. A Shattered Hope is played on both ROCK 105.3 and 91X in San Diego as well as on a radio station in Nashville, Tennessee. All touring is being completely funded and booked by the band themselves. However, booking and funding their own tours is nothing new to A Shattered Hope. This has been the routine for them since the beginning. A Shattered Hope has been making waves all over the West Coast, but that is only the starting point for their music career. They are coming to a venue near you. If you want fast paced, high energy performances for your entertainment value, the San Diego boys will surely deliver.
