Great songwriting, gripping crunching riffs, and rhythmic blasting blended perfectly with serious groove. Ashes Within is what the metal scene has long been looking for. With elements of Lamb of God and Meshuggah, this band is a force to be reckoned with.
Ashes Within plays brutal, honest music. They don’t try to emulate a style, or fit into any particular arcane sub-genre of the metal scene. Their songs are crafted for maximum visceral impact, whether it be simple or complex, harmonious or discordant. They play mercilessly, with an unmatched concern for both style and substance. In an era of posture and pretense, they are a band whose music demands to be listened to.
"This music is our collectively distilled response to both personal and global events. Things aren’t pretty out there, and they’re degenerating daily. We feel like the music we’re writing is perhaps the only rational response to the things going on around us. The world is gut-wrenchingly harsh and ugly much of the time; so be it—our music stands as a rejoinder to that ugliness."
Nowhere is this more apparent than at Ashes Within’s aggressive live shows. “We basically just give it all live,” responds guitarist Miguel. “We go out there to decimate. That’s what we grew up with, what we know. The live show is when it all comes out.” And decimate they do. Renowned in the fertile Brooklyn underground as one of the most violently cathartic acts in the scene, Ashes Within are both feared and loved for their devastating stage performances.
Recent review for the September 16th, 2009 show at Ace of Clubs by
The Pit Fiend for www.UndergroundMetalNYC.com:
"Ashes Within came on and simply decimated the stage. I hate to overuse the word brutal, but these guys are brutal plain and simple. They presented a deep, bestial grind with harsh and ricocheting screams. The twangy riffs and tirades of blast beats got the hardcore dancers going. I managed to avoid about six punches to the face and two kicks during the hurricane of megalomaniac noise. I’ll be sure to go back to my old Jiu Jitsu sensai and let him know how much my training came in handy, and pretty much the only time thus far, during nothing other than an Ashes Within set."
