About me: The 8th Annual Ashland Independent Film Festival is scheduled for April 2-6, 2009. Most of the 80 high quality independent films play at the art-deco Varsity Theatre located in the heart of historic downtown Ashland, the Washington Post called “a dream you’ll never want to leave." Special events are held at the Historic Ashland Armory nearby. Films showings begin from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day. For more information visit www.ashlandfilm.org.
Over 6000 cinema lovers gather each year and filmmakers of the documentaries, features and shorts come from around the world come to engage with the audience. The AIFF features filmmaker Q/A after screenings, Opening Night Bash and Award Celebration parties with local wine, beer and gourmet food, and the nightly afterLOUNGE at a local pub. Special guests have included Helen Hunt, Albert Maysles, Bruce Campbell and more.
Ashland is included in the popular travel guide A Thousand Places to See Before You Die and Shawn Levy, of The Oregonian newspaper, said the AIFF "offers movie lovers that same sense of being in a magical place...Southern Oregon doesn't have anything else like it -- nor, in fact, do most places on Earth.”
Ashland Independent Film Festival passes are available now. Individual tickets go on sale to all AIFF members by March 14 and to the general public March 18 here and at the AIFF box office on the plaza in Ashland.
The 2008 AIFF Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to "the dean of documentary filmmakers" Albert Maysles. He brought his classic documentaries Gimme Shelter, Grey Gardens, and his new film The Gates to the festival. Academy Award Winner Helen Hunt screened her directoral debut Then She Found Me and receive the 2008 AIFF Rogue Award.
Last fall the festival was honored with a prestigious grant from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences earmarked to enable more filmmakers, actors, and documentary subjects to travel to Ashland and showcase their work. The AIFF was the only festival in the Northwest, and one of only 20 in the U.S., selected to receive an Academy Festival grant.
Last year's exciting turn out looked like this:
87 films in our '08 program, plus 4 panel discussions and Albert Maysles' Handheld from the Heart special presentation.
52 films represented by filmmakers (including Locals)
21 jurors
13 jurors attended
71 filmmakers, jurors and their guests were housed
5 Festivals attended: BendFilm, Indie Memphis Film Festival, Mt Shasta Int'l Film Festival, Port Townsend Film Festival, Sedona Int'l Film Festival.
In addition to ten juried and audience awards, the AIFF holds The Launch, a free film competition for students from across Southern Oregon. One of last years winners went on to screenings at international film festivals. Winners in each of the age categories, K-5, 6-8, 9-12, and college, are featured at the festival.
Our Mission: The Southern Oregon Film Society is dedicated to presenting independent film through the annual ashland independent film festival and providing cultural and educational events in the region year round.
Whether you're a filmmaker or a film lover, we hope you'll join us April 2-6, 2009 for next year's exciting festival!

Hey Friends, it's me, Flowmotion & the Meltdown Festival.
Just wanted to remind everyone, the festival is coming up in about two weeks or so. Ticket prices will be higher at the gate so now is the time to buy them. 30+ bands on three stages, camping on 40 acres next to the river and epic views of glacier capped Whitehorse Mountain from the stage. It's about 75 minutes north of Seattle in Darrington WA. This is going to be one of the best years yet, so please tell all your friends and help spread the Meltdown word! Visit the official site at www.summermeltdown.com

Hey friend of Flowmotion, Can you help us spread the word about tomorrows show in Ashland? Apparently the Mobius got temporarily shut down for a liquor violation of some sort, so we have moved our show for Friday the 9th to the Jackson WellSprings. Please, if you were planning on coming, let all your friends know of this change. Thanks so much.
Hey friend of Flowmotion, we'll be in your neck of the woods on Friday May 9th at the The Mobius in Ashland, OR. Hope you can make it out and party with us.
Great job on another wonderful festival! It's always over way too quick, never get to see all the movies I wanted. I missed being a part of it as a filmmaker, hopefully I'll have something for you next year.
