Hailing from a cultural mix that combines the NSW South Coast and the ACT, Ashleigh Mannix is a singer songwriter who is a fresh face to the Australian music scene. With her carefree nature she is combining folk and pop genres to create a unique blend of music that is attracting both local and global attention.
Ashleigh is an independent artist and until mid 2008 had no releases in stores. It was her strength as a live artist which caught the attention of the music industry. She was invited to perform at the relaunch of The Rolling Stone magazine where she was introduced as “unknown and unsigned” performing alongside Neil Finn, Powder finger and The Living End to a packed Horden Pavillion.
Ashleigh has performed at local festivals including Woodford, Peats Ridge, Festival of the Sun, Stonefest and the Narooma Blues and Roots. She has also performed extensively overseas including performances in France, Spain, Hawaii and at the prestigious Fuji Rock Festival in Japan. A direct result of the Fuji Rock performance was a record deal in Japan with Pony Canyon and Surf Rock International. The first single from this Japanese Album went to No. 37 on their national charts and reached No. 2 in Kobe on Kiss FM.
She has supported both national and international acts including Tim Freedman (the Whitlams), Lior, Lisa Mitchell, Ron Sexsmith, Abby Dobson, Toni Childs , Mark Seymour, Teitur, Luka Bloom, Josh Pyke, Robert Wells and Michael Franti and has just returned from the US and Canada where she was showcased in Toronto and Ann Arbour.
Ashleigh is sponsored by Billabong internationally and performs at their events worldwide and has opened for MGMT at the Spider Club in LA.
Magazine editor and columnist Mia Freedman’s article “The most exciting artist I’ve heard in forever……” best summarises the experience of witnessing Ashleigh play live:
"There was one other performer. A girl I’d never heard of. I think she was about 20, she looked 15 and she didn’t even have a record label. Her name was Ashleigh Mannix and she blew everyone away. When she got up on the tiny, makeshift stage in bare feet, long blonde hair everywhere, a guitar strapped over one shoulder and long, hippi-ish clothes, I worried for her. …….people are rude and they talk instead of listening……. But when Ashleigh began to sing – just her and her acoustic guitar – the entire room stopped. It was electrifying and she captured everyone’s attention in a way even the other infinitely more experienced artists couldn’t quite do. She was delightful…..”
