The music of Ask the Slave is truly unique in the Icelandic music scene. A contemporary avant-rock cocktail, mixed with 70’s prog influences and a dash of metal. Originally named Silver Cock, the band started playing shows around Reykjavik in the fall of 2004. The band changed its name to Ask the Slave and released its first eponymous demo in january of 2005. Their thematic debut album - Kiss Your Chora - was independently released in 2007. Although the record recieved fairly good revievs, pracing the bands high level of ambition, the album got poor media attention and very little radioplay. One of the songs, Bathtub, was included on a CD compilation released in the United States by 272 Records. The bands sophomore release, named The order of things, is currently underway, scheduled to be released in spring of 2009. Also underway is a six song live Ep recorded in august 2008. The band will also be featured on a live DVD due to be released by Molestine Records.
Several changes in lineup over the years has contributed to the bands distinct yet versatile sound. Adding to this, the bands original founding members - guitarist Elvar Atli Ævarsson and singer Ragnar Ólafsson - believe that their music should be composed without regards to a certain style or genre.
The name of the band, as well as many of their lyrics, deals with the fact that historically the hardest of times have been the most frugal and creative in respect to art. On stage the frontman Ragnar often plays the role of the angry preacher, trying to get the "Slavian" message thru to the audience. Another key factor in the art of the band is humor and the need for absurd ingredients. An oftenly stated fact withing the walls of the bands rehersing room is that if a certain musical idea or passage is sick enough it will work.
Ask the Slave has earned a reputation for putting on mad and energetic live shows, often engaging the audience in different ways. Memorable performances include their appearance at the Eistnaflug festival in 2007 and 2008.
