About me:

The A-Space, established in 1991 is an anarchist community space located at 4722 Baltimore Avenue in West Philadelphia. It is operated by an all volunteer anarchist collective who share chores, rotate responsibilities, and make decisions by consensus.

The A-Space is home to Philadelphia groups such as Books Through Bars, the Philadelphia Anti-War Forum, PALS & the Philadelphia Icarus Project. It is also used for lectures, meetings, performances, art showings, movies & videos, benefits, cultural events, educational events, & other events that bring people together. The building is part the Life Center Association.

The Life Center Association (LCA) is a land trust that owns several houses in West Philadelphia. Instead of paying rent to a landlord each month, the people living in these buildings pay money toward a common pool that's available for the upkeep of the houses. A representative from each building makes up the board, which meets monthly to discuss any needed repairs.

The A-Space Collective meets monthly. Folks with questions, ideas for events, or an interest in showing their art or joining the collective are welcome to drop in at these meetings. Call or email for dates & times. The A-space has voicemail, an email address, an event announcement listserv, a web page & a monthly calendar to keep people informed of upcoming events. People interested using the A-Space can call or email for more information and to find out available times.

Who I'd like to meet:
anarchists, anti-authoritarians and other radicals, folks interested in having events at the A-Space, folks interested in joining the collective

Call for Submissions: Anarchist Yarns

Deadline: August 1st
Length: 1000 words or less
How to Submit: email louisvuittonnight@gmail.com

Description:
Anarchism has a bad rap. There are so many myths and negative assumptions about anarchists floating around that to wade through them all would turn anyone into a creature from the black and red lagoon. Which is why we’re devoting a whole issue to our stories from the silly to the poignant, from the hilahrious to the just fucked. We want everyone and their granny anarchy to write in a short little story that presents the real side of anarchists, whatever that may be. Don’t pull your punches though, no one’s selling anything, we want the truth and nothing but the truth. We are particularly interested in getting some good old punk house stories or stories about all the crazy anarchist co-op shit that goes down but we are equally interested in the personal side of things, the tears behind the sunglasses, so to speak. Honestly, it can even be made up if necessary, fuck the truth, in fact a bed-time story or two wouldn’t hurt anyone. We know you have your stories, and you have a full month, so make it work!

ps.
We’re still looking for anarchist erotic stories, do anarchists even have sex anymore?

Thanks for adding me. ¶ Love, but not blindly — don't confuse it with sleep. Love all people, but not all ideas; think to distinguish helpful ideas from hurtful ones. We must end our culture of destruction before it ends us. ¶ Our many problems have a common root: Bullies, liars, thieves, & murderers — particularly those in public office — believe people are motivated only by greed & fear. They want us to share that belief, because they use it to justify themselves & to manipulate us. That belief shapes the world's political & economic systems, perpetuating war & poverty. But you & I have found something better inside ourselves & our friends. It's in everyone, even tank drivers & bomber pilots, if we can just wake them: we're all one flesh & blood. Let us spread that insight, for until we do our other advances will be minor & temporary. The outcome of the ideological struggle is not yet determined, so no one can afford to be just a spectator. Join the global conversation. ¶ The Iraq war, like most wars, was based on lies, & now the occupation is making new enemies faster than it can kill them; that's helpful only to arms dealers & politicians. Ending the occupation won't change much — the next war is already being planned. (Same war, new location!) The economy is all wrong too: the rich get richer & fewer, everyone else gets screwed, & the ecosystem gets trashed. These problems are not new, but lately they've become so blatant that we've begun to understand them. It's time to end the military-industrial complex & the corporatocracy. We the people must control government, & government must control business, not the other way around. A good start would be transparency in government, public financing of election campaigns, trustbusting the news media, & ending corporate personhood. ¶ Question authority. Keep fighting, loving, hoping, singing. Hand in hand, we may still be able to heal the world.
— Love, Eric

March 10, 2008
National Day of Support of Abortion Providers
http://www.refuseandresist.org/ab/index.html

On this day -
Stand up with your abortion services providers and say:
Thank you for your heroism, perserverance, courage, and commitment to women.

* Praise clinic staff and doctors with cards and letters of appreciation. Let them know they have your support and thanks.
* Bring your local clinic staff flowers or a breakfast basket of fruit or muffins.
* Organize local appreciation day events.
* Organize with others to hold a March 10th dinner with area providers.
* Step up to the front lines and be a volunteer clinic escort.
* Ask your local provider how you can help.
* Write your local newspaper, call talk shows to express support.
* Take out ads in your newsletters and local newspapers.
* Use your imagination, creativity and dedication to help create a climate at clinics where women, doctors and staff can hold their heads high without feeling shamed or fearing assault.

The National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers was initiated in 1996 and co-sponsored by many national organizations and individuals, as a way to help stop the isolation and create a positive climate for abortion providers across the country. March 10th is the anniversary of the assassination of Dr. David Gunn, the first provider murdered by an anti-abortion extremist. It is a day to remember and honor Dr. Gunn and others who have and continue to put their lives on the line daily to make choice possible. Without abortion providers, there can be no "choice." And without choice women cannot be free to live and plan their lives!

In the shadow of the first federal ban on an abortion procedure and the criminalization of doctors who perform this service for women in need, and with the subsequent federal subpoenas of patient records, it is especially important right now to let providers know we stand with them.

A group of Lakota activists have declared independence from the United States. They intend to withdraw from existing treaty agreements and establish a Lakota country that would issue its own passports and drivers' licenses.

Citing total frustration with a "colonial apartheid system imposed on the Lakota Sioux" that has produced incomprehensibly high levels of infant mortality, Tuberculosis, poverty, unemployment, and teenage suicide amongst the Lakota people, the proposed new country would exist independent of the United States and require its citizens to renounce their American citizenship.

This provocative declaration will likely have significant implications for Aboriginal people throughout North America, many of whom have been mired in slow-moving treaty negotiations and become increasingly frustrated with a perceived lack of progress or substantive improvement in their communities.

The Lakota Indians, who gave the world legendary warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from treaties with the US.

"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us,'' long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means said.

A delegation of Lakota leaders has delivered a message to the State Department, and said they were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties they signed with the federal government of the US, some of them more than 150 years old.

The group also visited the Bolivian, Chilean, South African and Venezuelan embassies, and would continue on their diplomatic mission and take it overseas in the coming weeks and months.

Lakota country includes parts of the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.

The new country would issue its own passports and driving licenses, and living there would be tax-free - provided residents renounce their US citizenship, Mr Means said.
