My name is Richie. I began performing as a one-man band in my ultra-conservative hometown, Elmira, NY in 2005. I called this band Assassi-Nation (ass-ass-i-NAY-shun). I managed to perform about twenty times in that community as well as write and record nearly fifty songs. But it wasn't easy. That part of the country just isn't ready for this little musical endeavor of mine. Just too many closed minds. I was in a constant battle with myself during this period. Wondering if anybody would ever acknowledge what I was doing was art and of merit. Then in early 2006 CBGB opened its doors to my performance twice just before they would close forever. With these performances behind me I finally had the confidence to leave that little town. I headed south. I tried to get on my feet in Richmond, VA, but just couldn't do it. After two weeks of toughing it out I headed on down to Jacksonville, FL to work for my uncle. I spent about eight months in Jax. It was pretty rad. The scene there was so refreshing compared to where I had come from. But financial troubles with my uncle's company left me unemployed, broke, and evicted. Frustrated and angry I packed my van with my records and guitars and headed for Austin. I have heard about Austin's music scene for years, but it was "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" documentary which finally compelled me to move here. I spent my first few weeks sleeping downtown in my van. I began performing at open mics during these first weeks and still do. Over the past eighteen months I've performed nearly eighty improvised songs and recorded several others. I've had the chance to meet some of my heroes and even make a few friends. Thank you people of Austin for being so kind. Oh and thanks to anyone who's still reading this! Now go check out a song. Or better yet go check out a band!
