   About The Assistants
realeditorbest profile toolsl

The Assistants, a Toronto-based quintet led by singer/songwriters Kiley Meehan and Ciaran Megahey, have been steadily gaining a repuation for their brand of inspired, melodic jangle-rock. In 2007 their self-titled album was released to glowing reviews in Canada and abroad. 2008 marks the release of their new EP Fiction. Recorded at Sleepytown Sound (Born Ruffians, Most Serene Republic), Fiction is a strong step forward and a short burst of sparkling pop in the most classic sense. Guitars chime, pianos ring and trumpets flare, creating an evocative backdrop at once familiar and forward-thinking. "Fiction" starts things off in a rousing fashion, a contagious glam-rock stomp that always threatens to burst. Next, the Assistants make a plunge into the cinematic "Stop Dead", a tightly wound ode to lost romance echoing the brightest moments of the Smiths and the Go-Betweens. With "When the Rain Falls", the band takes a breather and lets the harmonies run free. EP closer "The Ghost in Your Skin" wraps things up with an electric kiss of washed-out synths and bristling guitars.

That was a great set at The Velvet Underground, the essence of dream-pop infused with a penchant for neo-psych bands like the BJM, glossed-over with a Smiths-like fluidity. A swirling blanket of fetching sonic driven-rock, captivating and plenty of energy, a treasury of that retro 60's spirit is always welcomed.

The Creed of Robert G.
Ingersoll

To love justice, to long for the right, to love mercy, to pity the suffering, to assist the weak, to forget wrongs and remember benefits -- to love the truth, to be sincere, to utter honest words, to love liberty, to wage relentless war against slavery in all its forms, to love wife and child and friend, to make a happy home, to love the beautiful in art, in nature, to cultivate the mind, to be familiar with the mighty thoughts that genius has expressed, the noble deeds of all the world, to cultivate courage and cheerfulness, to make others happy, to fill life with the splendor of generous acts, the warmth of loving words, to discard error, to destroy prejudice, to receive new truths with gladness, to cultivate hope, to see the calm beyond the storm, the dawn beyond the night, to do the best that can be done and then to be resigned -- this is the religion of reason, the creed of science. This satisfies the heart and brain.
