For more films and documentaries on violence, visit Pixie's site!
Television
In terms of survivor related stuff:
Law & Order: SVU, Homicide: Life On the Street. Lifetime TV can be much too triggering sometimes, but occasionally it has a good film.
Books
Books that are instrumental in your healing:
The Courage to Heal: A Guide for Women Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse - Ellen Bass & Laura Davis
This is considered the bible of all recovery books. It's open, it's raw, it can be triggering, but it opens you to discussion in your journal or with your therapist.
Invisible Girls: The Truth About Sexual Abuse - Dr. Patti Feuereisen
Dr. Patti wrote this amazing book which is appropriate for teenage girls (and those hoping to understand abused teenage girls) but it is appropriate and very helpful to young women as well. The aftermath is explained in detail, and the different issues around different types of sexual abuse (including incest, mentor abuse, date or acquaintance rape, gang rape, etc.) are explored. Highly recommended!
Allies In Healing: When the Person You Love Was Sexually Abused as a Child - Laura Davis
This is a really good book by a Courage to Heal co-author. Has ideas for secondary survivors to help themselves and their loved one.
Against Our Will: Men, Women, and Rape - Susan Brownmiller
A classic text which delineates the horrific history of rape as crime. Covers a variety of situations, locations, and historical periods.
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings - Maya Angelou
The first volume of Maya's biography. Included is the account of Maya's rape at 8 years old, the trial, and the aftermath. Very harrowing, but also truly inspiring.
Recovering from Rape - Linda E. Ledray
Practical and helpful book from a nurse.
The Gift of Fear: Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence - Gavin DeBecker
Excellent book that teaches us how to use our intuition to prevent becoming victims, whether we have already been victimized, or haven't.
Telling: A Memoir of Rape and Recovery - Patricia Weaver Francisco
Beautifully written story about Patricia's rape, healing, and involvement with the Silent Witnesses project.
Hope for the Brokenhearted: Biblical Solutions for Survivors of Abuse and Rape - Pastor Todd R. Cook
The book is practical as it says it is. The book combines Pastor Cook's experience as a crisis counselor, with his spiritual knowledge. Very good book.
Bonshea: Making Light of the Dark - Coral Anika Theill
Ohmigosh...this book is stunning. It details the cruelty Coral suffered at the hands of her religious fanatic husband, and how the Oregon court system very seriously failed her.
Living Nightmares of Abuse - Phyllis Benton
This is a really good book detailing Phyllis' brave survival of child sexual abuse and domestic violence.
My friend Louise has come out with a book!

About me: Hi and welcome to my profile. My name is Annaleigh, and I am an activist in the anti-abuse/rape movement, both on an online and offline basis. For the last 6 years I have been the webmistress of a survivor site called As Waters Passing By: Resources for Survivors of Abuse. The site takes up quite a bit of my energy, but I find other ways to be active. For the record, I am a survivor of child sexual abuse/incest, teenage sexual assault/relationship violence, and I grew up in a violent home. You can read my story here. Please be warned that #1 my story can be very triggering (a date rape survivor, for instance, told me that as a mother of two small children, she couldn't bear to read past the earliest parts of my story) and #2, I have been through and come through so much + plus I am a longwinded writer, therefore it is a long read! :) Also, you can read my testimony here.
Some ways I am active include:
Maintaining As Waters Passing By
Participating in the upcoming audio documentary Voices of Strength
Writing and researching articles for Survivor SUCCESSors, a magazine for survivors.
Creating survivor poetry, art, and theater pieces.
Providing RAINN pamphlets to the Delano College Center
Coordinating a one-woman teddy bear project for the Jamison Children's Center
I firmly believe that everyone can and needs to heal, with the help of compassion and practical help as well. This is why I have continued with As Waters Passing By over the years. By attending therapy and finding many resources that helped me in my healing, I was placed in a position where I could give back to survivors. I am available by email to talk about any struggles you have as a survivor. By the grace of my Lord, I know what to say, and I know where to find practical help. My site is jampacked with information and my own thoughts and experiences. It could be considered a Christian site, but I know that many survivors suffered secondary (or even primary!) wounding through religion, so the Christian resources are there but not forced on anyone.
Please visit the site, and see what kind of information there could be of use to you. And you may always email me here with any suggestions you have.
I love you all very much,
-- Annaleigh

Who I'd like to meet: I would love to meet my notable survivor heroes! In terms of who I'm looking to send/recieve add requests to/from, I am hoping to find anyone who wants to support the raising awareness of rape, domestic violence, and child abuse. They may be individual survivors and supporters, ministries, any campus groups, V-Day participants, riot grrrl collectives, any survivor or supporter artists, fellow activists, webmasters/mistresses of survivor sites, etc. etc. I also invite those searching for missing loved ones. If you add me, I will probably put something about your loved one here on this space, as well as at my survivor site. Giving the gift of a little extra exposure is the least I can do. If that's you, drop me a line or add request! I also welcome invitations to pertinent MySpace groups. :)
