Asylum Fight Carl Mascarenhas

This past weekend I had to opportunity to check out a mixed martial arts show promoted by the Asylum Fight League. 

I’ve been to four UFC fights, an EliteXC fight, and five or six IFL fights.
I’ve seen some of these smaller promotions air fight cards on HDNet, but I have never had the opportunity to actually attend one.
That being said, the Asylum Fight League put on one hell of a local production Saturday Night,
and I will be attending any and all of their future shows that I can make it to.

The fight card was held inside club Abyss located in Sayreville, New Jersey.
They put a cage at the far end of the club, and you are free to walk around near the cage or stand on the elevated areas next to the bar.
The below photo was taken from one of the elevated areas bear the bar. Please forgive the quality of the photo, I did not have an SLR with me.

 

When the fight gets taken to the ground, it does get a bit difficult to see what is going on,
but they have a cameraman filming the action and the video is sent to a projection screen located above one of the bars.
No matter where you are in the club, you can see what is going on inside the cage.
Three bars were open, and there was also a small café serving snacks in case you were hungry.

The card was scheduled to have 20 fights.
I heard that some fighters did not make weight so I do not know if all of the fights happened.
I do know that I saw plenty of MMA action, and a lot of exciting fights. No lop sided decisions, lots of exciting fights.....

The crowd was amazing.
It was mostly comprised of people who train mixed martial arts and family members of those fighting.
There were also many MMA fans in attendance. It was one of the most educated crowds I have ever seen at a fight.
Every time a fighter was mounted, or about to lock and arm bar, working on a submission, taking someone’s back, etc.
there were cheers from the audience.
It was so refreshing to be surrounded by so many educated fans of the sport and I had a smile from ear to ear from 7pm until the end of the fight. ....

All in all, the show was solid from top to bottom.
I had a blast , and will definitely be attending future AFL shows.
If you are in the area of one of their events, I suggest you do the same.
