all good band biographies involve a large dash of happenstance, and it must be said that this is true of ataraxy more than most. if the lincoln peace festival hadn't been short of a band one year...if a certain someone hadn't seen an ad that another certain someone hadn't put in a music paper...or we could go even further back. if someone's dad hadn't got slightly tipsy with one of his mates one cold winter night, and invented a snow-clearing machine...but that's another story, and it would take a long time to tell it, and i know you're busy.
but so many little strands had to come together for the fickle finger of fate to point rora, jason and damo in all the right directions. happily it all came together somehow and when they started making music with each other they liked how it turned out. the chemistry was good. they toyed with one or two alternative band names (the vordermans? oh we still love that one) but they were ataraxy. ataraxy it remained.
for two or three (or was it four?) years ataraxy gigged and recorded frequently. receptions were positive and some people really liked their music. they had the time of their lives recording their debut mini-album 'rabaluka' in a converted barn in the heart of the lincolnshire countryside, and had almost as much fun with their debut ep recorded in an industrial estate in bermondsey. they had high ambitions, a strong belief in their music, and (most importantly as it turned out) great affection for each other.
slowly, almost imperceptibly, the dreams of world domination (in a musical sense, of course) dissipated amongst involvements with other bands and, in one band member's case, piles of dirty nappies. but within all that the ambition, belief and affection remained, and they recently began playing together again.
rehearsals are a luxury these days, but then ataraxy are so familiar with the songs and each other that they hardly seem necessary. ataraxy are set to become a regular fixture on the london circuit once more and if attendances at their recent gigs are anything to go by, some people are very happy about this. but none more so, i suspect, than rora, jason and damo themselves.
the songs that you can hear on this page represent ataraxy's music rather well, being by turns triumphant, fragile, quirky, opulent, sparse and heartfelt. but the best way to hear them is live - just the three of them with all the associated passion, humour and energy that that entails. for details of upcoming gigs, email the vordermans@gmail.com or keep a close eye on this page.
