Cursive, Pedro the Lion, Sunny Day Real Estate, Death Cab For Cutie, Mineral, Jimmy Eat World, the Get Up Kids, At the Drive In, the Cars, Weezer
Sounds Like
The emotion of Cursive mixed with the songwriting of Pedro the Lion with the energy of At the Drive In but with dynamics like Mineral, and maybe the catchiness of early =w=eezer. I would never say we're as good as these bands, but this is kind of our goal to mix these elements.
Atari Champ was a 5 piece energetic, melodic, rock n roll band from Central California. After over 6 years of playing live, Atari Champ released 2 EP’s (There were Times (2000) & the Truck EP(2002)) and a full length (Nostalgia (2003)). Along with recording music, Atari Champ played shows all over the Western United States and completed 6 or 7 self-booked tours outside California. Commonly asked for what "style" of music they play, Atari Champ has had a hard time describing it. Their songs usually have a wide dynamic range and feature soft melodic parts that build to loud full-energy segments. The tones of the songs range from spacy and intimate to distorted and loud. With tempos ranging from slow and pluggin along, to upbeat and driving, you can always expect something a little different with each track. Being influenced by a diverse range of ultra-creative bands such as At The Drive In, Death Cab For Cutie, Pedro the Lion, and Cursive, has inspired Atari Champ to aim high artistically and musically. Lyrically, Atari Champ’s songs are diverse. Often the songs are told from a third person perspective, more akin to a novel rather than a poem. The stories range in topic from childhood treasure hunts, rodeo tragedies, lonely outerspace travels, truckin’ on the open road and much more. Even with the seemingly impersonal topics, Lyricist, Paul Chesterton, seems to find a way to bring the words back home.
As you may have heard, Atari Champ played our last show on Friday July 14th, 2006. That’s it... As far as what the members are up to:
Paul Chesterton - playing upright bass for a bluegrass band named the Dalton Mountain Gang and wrote and performed some songs with Mike Morris in a group named Montgomery Hill
Mike Morris - playing with a group named Circles and Circles which also features our fill in bass player, Luke Freeman
MathR - has a new group, I think they’re unnamed at the moment.
