MÉTODO PARA A COMPREENSÃO TÉCNICA E MUSICAL DA BATERIA
“Este livro visa a implementação de um novo meio de sustentação pedagógica e metodológica, de modo a colmatar um preocupante défice informativo de publicações sobre métodos de estudo, na área da música em Portugal.
A desenvoltura técnica e criativa do músico depende directamente da acessibilidade da informação disponibilizada para o efeito. Assim é imprescindível que sejam criados formatos de apoio pedagógico para uma clara compreensão da linguagem musical, de modo a que todos os interessados possam aperfeiçoar as suas qualidades técnicas e musicais.
Este método de ensino pretende criar uma maior aproximação ao extenso universo da bateria e percussão, através da concessão de informação, técnicas e exemplos práticos, que foram testados e aperfeiçoados pelo autor, após terem sido utilizados nas suas próprias aulas e seminários ao longo do país.”

Foi fundado em 2001 por HUGO DANIN no Quartel do Bom Pastor (espaço gentilmente cedido pelo IASFA. Foi inicialmente um espaço dedicado ao desenvolvimento de actividades musicais em conjunto com outros músicos e artistas. Mas desde logo se percebeu que estavam criadas cada vez mais condições para a construção de um modelo de escola dinâmico e interessante, onde a partilha do conhecimento nesta área teria um destaque muito importante. Rapidamente se transformou num centro de estudo individual e colectivo de onde até à data terão passado mais de uma centena de alunos.
É um espaço direccionado para um público específico, interessado e amante desta disciplina.
O trabalho desenvolvido com o aluno é individual e de acordo com as necessidades e exigências de cada um.
É feito um estudo pormenorizado das características técnicas e musicais do indivíduo e aplicado posteriormente o método adequado.
Este espaço pretende proporcionar ao interessado uma visão mais abrangente do estudo e compreensão deste instrumento através de um trabalho intenso em todas as áreas musicais. Facultando deste modo uma maior capacidade de execução técnica e musical em qualquer tipo de contexto musical.
Ambiciona ainda a criação de momentos de criação individual e em grupo capazes de proporcionar um complemento educativo e musical mais enriquecedor. Pretende que estes momentos possam de alguma forma acontecer não só neste espaço como também fora dele, como foi o caso da realização de workshops e masterclasses que este atelier organizou em parceria com variadas instituições (ESMAE, Instituto Orff do Porto, Casa da Música, Conservatório de Ponta Delgada, Coliseu do Porto, entre outros), onde estiveram presentes Peter Erskine, Michael Lauren, Marcos Valcarcel, Dom famularo, Vera Figueiredo, Hugo Danin, Vicky, etc.
O intuito destas iniciativas prende-se com a tentativa de elevar este instrumento a um nível superior e aumentar o interesse na partilha de informação entre os intervenientes.

CURSO - OFICINA DO RITMO
Na primeira semana de Agosto realizou-se no Atelier de Percussão o curso – Oficina do Ritmo, sendo Hugo Danin o professor encarregue da formação.
O Curso atingiu satisfatoriamente todos os seus objectivos prévios, sendo que o ambiente foi fantástico entre os formandos o que provocou uma rápida aprendizagem e um contexto rítmico em grupo deveras interessante.
O curso abrangeu diversos contextos musicais e diversas técnicas de percussão, sendo que numa primeira fase foi abordado questões mais teóricas e técnicas, seguido de um segundo momento mais prático e multi-percurtivo.
Por último foi realizada uma análise sobre o curso e conteúdos adquiridos assim como dicas importantes para o futuro (Francisco Lima).

WORSHOPS - FNAC DO MAR SHOPPING, GAIA E BRAGA
Américo Nogueira, Lda., veio por este meio apresentar pela 1ª vez em Portugal a maior apresentação ao vivo de equipamento e acessórios para Bateria e percussão. Através de um modelo de demonstração prática e com a presença de um dos mais conceituados bateristas nacionais (HUGO DANIN - GNR, Andre Indiana, DEP, entre muitos outros). O primeiro workshop foi realizada na fnac do Mar shoopping, de seguida este evento teve lugar na fnac do Gaia shopping e na fnac de Braga, demostrando o dinamismo desta equipa que sustenta esta apresentação nacional, de certo que este evento não vai parar por aqui. Os acessórios demosntrados nos tres workshops já realizados centraram-se na nova série de pratos da Sabian - os APX e nos produtos que a Pro-Mark tem para oferecer, aqui destacaram-se novas baquetas e acessórios que visam dar resposta a novos desafios e sons que a musica actual acarreta. Por último foi demosntrado as novas peles da Evans, que se destacam quanto á sua qualidade de fabrico e som, havendo também neste caso inumeros modelos que dão resposta a diferentes sonoridades e estilos musicais. MIKE CLARK gained worldwide recognition as one of America’s foremost jazz and funk drummers while playing with Herbie Hancock’s group in the early 1970’s. Mike became known as a major innovator through his incisive playing on Hancock’s Thrust album, which garnered him an international cult following.
Mike has performed with jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Chet Baker, Tony Bennett, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Woody Shaw, Larry Coryell, Jack Wilkins, Wallace Roney, Geri Allen, Billy Childs, James Genus, Bob Hurst, Chris Potter, Onaje Allan Gumbs, Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, Dave Liebman, Nat Adderly, Oscar Brown Jr., Bill Doggett, Mose Allison, Maxine Brown, Gil Evans and his orchestra, and did a stint with Brand X, the acclaimed British fusion band, founded by Phil Collins. He has performed throughout the world at all the major jazz venues and festivals.
Featured in Downbeat, Musician, International Musician & Recording World, Modern Drummer, Jazz Times, Guitar Player, Jazz Is and numerous jazz history and method books, Mike is a former faculty member of Drummers Collective, and is a popular and busy clinician around the country. His book Funk Drumming: Innovative Grooves & Advanced Concepts was published last year by Hal Leonard and is a best seller.
Called “the most sampled drummer in hip hop” Mike’s beats have been used on tracks by musicians as diverse as NWA, Grandmaster Flash, Britney Spears, Prince and many others.
His numerous recording credits include albums with Herbie Hancock, the Headhunters, Brand X, Eddie Henderson, Jack Wilkins, Mark Puricelli, Mike Wolff, and Alien Army, a group led by guitar great Jack Wilkins. As a bandleader, his release Give The Drummer Some was very enthusiastically received, earning a rare four and a half stars in Downbeat, as was The Funk Stops Here, a joint effort with Hancock alumni Paul Jackson. In 2001, his solo CD, Actual Proof met with critical acclaim, as did the 2003 acoustic jazz release, Summertime, featuring Chris Potter and Billy Childs, which spent many weeks in the top ten charts.
Other efforts included a compilation of his legendary, innovative funk beat samples, Mike Clark—The Headhunter, a re-release of the widely acclaimed Thrust album, and, in 1998, The Return Of The Headhunters, featuring Herbie Hancock. Next came Herbie Hancock’s Box Set, featuring Headhunters classics “Actual Proof” and “Butterfly,” from Thrust, a few choice cuts from Manchild, and also some historical tracks from the classic Flood, previously only available in Japan. The Headhunters’ newest effort, Evolution/Revolution, released in 2003, featured the latest Headhunter configuration, with original founding members Mike, Bill Summers and Paul Jackson, joined by Donald Harrison, Victor Atkins (Los Hombres Caliente), and Nicholas Payton.
Of his latest endeavor, a recording as a bandleader with Christian MacBride, Donald Harrison, Patrice Rushen, Jed Levy and Christian Scott, produced by Talking House Productions, Mike said it promises to be “some of the most exciting music I’ve ever been involved with.” He’s also featured on Mike Wollf’s latest recording Love And Destruction, and just got out of the studio with country blues legend Delbert McClinton
His band Prescription Renewal, which debuted in the winter of 2000, electrified audiences across the country with an eclectic core of cross generational multi talents such as Charlie Hunter, Fred Wesley, Skerik, Robert Walter, and DJ Logic, and always featured stellar special guests such as George Porter Jr. of Funky Meters’ fame, Kyle Hollingsworth of String Cheese Incident, Les Claypool, Will Bernard, Larry Goldings and fellow Headhunters alumni, Bill Summers, and proved a hit on the thriving young jam band scene. Touring concurrently that year and the next was the Roots Funk All Stars, another hot ad hoc association that married Mike with James Brown trombonist Fred Wesley, former Headhunter cohort and funk bassist legend Paul Jackson, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Robben Ford. In 2004 he teamed up for a series of gigs with fellow drumming legend Lenny White in a two drummer powerhouse band called New Brew featuring music inspired by Miles Davis’ landmark recording Bitches Brew.
Mike is currently busy touring with his own Prescription Organ Trio / Duo, featuring Jerry Z, doing clinics and performing at clubs and concerts nationwide. He’s also a regular in pianist Mike Wolf’s band, Impure Thoughts and continues to do Headhunters’ projects around the world. Mike just returned from the annual PASIC convention in Austin, TX where he performed with fellow drummer Jim Payne to an enthusiastic full house. In 2007, he has tours booked throughout Europe, South America, South Africa and Russia.

Zakir Hussain is today appreciated both in the field of percussion and in the music world at large as an international phenomenon. A classical tabla virtuoso of the highest order, his consistently brilliant and exciting performances have not only established him as a national treasure in his own country, India, but gained him worldwide fame. The favorite accompanist for many of India's greatest classical musicians and dancers, from Ali Akbar Khan and Ravi Shankar to Birju Maharaj and Shivkumar Sharma, he has not let his genius rest there. His playing is marked by uncanny intuition and masterful improvisational dexterity, founded in formidable knowledge and study.
Widely considered a chief architect of the contemporary world music movement, Zakir's contribution to world music has been unique, with many historic collaborations including Shakti, which he founded with John McLaughlin and L. Shankar, the Diga Rhythm Band, Making Music, Planet Drum with Mickey Hart, and recordings and performances with artists as diverse as George Harrison, Joe Henderson, Van Morrison, Jack Bruce, Tito Puente, Pharoah Sanders, Billy Cobham, the Hong Kong Symphony and the New Orleans Symphony.
A child prodigy, Zakir was touring by the age of twelve, the gifted son of his great father, tabla legend Ustad Alla Rakha. Zakir came to the United States in 1970, embarking on an international career which includes no fewer than 150 concert dates a year. He has composed and recorded many albums and soundtracks, and has received widespread recognition as a composer for his many ensembles and historic collaborations. Most recently, he has composed soundtracks for the films In Custody, Ismail Merchant's directorial debut, Little Buddha by Bernardo Bertolucci, for which Zakir composed, performed and acted as Indian music advisor and Vanaprastham, chosen to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May, 1999.
Zakir received the distinct honor of co-composing the opening music for the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, 1996, and was commissioned to compose music for San Francisco's premiere contemporary ballet company, Lines, and to compose an original work for the San Francisco Jazz Festival, both in 1998. He has received numerous grants and awards, including participation in the Meet the Composer programs funded by the Pew Memorial Trust.
In 1987, his first solo release, "Making Music," was acclaimed as "one of the most inspired East-West fusion albums ever recorded." In 1988, he became the youngest percussionist to ever be awarded the title of "Padma Shri" by the Indian government, a title given to civilians of merit. In 1990, he was awarded the Indo-American Award in recognition for his outstanding cultural contribution to relations between the United States and India. In April, 1991, he was presented with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award by the President of India, making him one of the youngest musicians to receive this recognition from India's governing cultural institute. Zakir is the recipient of the 1999 National Heritage Fellowship, the United States' most prestigious honor for a master in the traditional arts.
In 1992, Planet Drum, an album co-created and produced by Zakir and Mickey Hart, was awarded a Grammy for Best World Music Album, the Downbeat Critics Poll for Best World Beat Album and the NARM Indie Best Seller Award for World Music Recording. Planet Drum, with Zakir as music director, toured nationally in 1996 and 1997. Zakir continues also to tour with the musicians from Shakti — John McLaughlin, Shankar and T.H. Vinayakram — in different collaborations and ensembles as well as lead various percussion ensembles of his own design. In Summer'99, Shakti re-grouped for an international tour.
In 1992, Zakir founded Moment! Records which features original collaborations in the field of contemporary world music, as well as live concert performances by great masters of the classical music of India. THE BUDDY RICH BIG BAND
"West Side Story Medley"
Perhaps his most popular later performance was a big band arrangement of a medley derived from the Leonard Bernstein classic West Side Story, first released on the 1966 album Buddy Rich s Swingin New Big Band
The West Side Story medley is considered by many as one of the most complex and difficult-to-perform big-band arrangements written. Penned by Bill Reddie, Rich received this arrangement of Leonard Bernstein s melodies from the famed musical in the mid-60s and found it to be very challenging even for him. It consists of many rapid-fire time changes and signatures and took almost a month of constant rehearsals to perfect. It has since become a staple in all his performances clocking in at various lengths from seven to fifteen minutes. Bernstein himself has had nothing but praise for it. In 2002, a DVD was released called The Lost West Side Story Tapes that captured a 1985 performance of this along with other numbers. These tapes were thought to be lost in a fire. (fonte: wikipedia)
