Atheist Longhorns's Interests
|
| General | We hope to expand the goals of this group as time goes on, but for now it's to get together atheists within the UT community and work to promote a positive attitude campus wide towards atheism.
40 Acres Fest(FAF) is an annual festival at the University of Texas @ Austin drawing 10,000-20,000 people in attendance each year. Student organizations (175 in 2006) setup a variety of booths with activities such as: jalapeño eating contests, obstacle courses, kissing booths, limbo contests, and even water gun assassins for hire. In addition to amazing organizations, FAF features live music all day long from Austin's hottest local bands performances from of UT's most talented students. What started as a small event with about 500 people in attendance has now grown to be the largest student-run event in the nation!
They usually put it on in late March. We should definitely participate in this one. It's big! | | Heroes | Bertrand Russell, Madelyn Murray O'Hair, Francis Crick, Albert Einstein, Thomas Henry Huxley, Charles Darwin, Carl Sagan, Gregor Mendel, H.P. Lovecraft, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., Bill Hicks, Robert Ingersoll, Ambrose Bierce. |

UT Austin student group Atheist Longhorns will be hosting guest lecturer Dr. Richard Dawkins at UT Austin. This event is open to the public with preference to students. Doors open for seating at 6pm, but keep in mind that limited seating is available. A ticket will be handed to you as you enter to assure we do not break fire code (the auditorium only holds 1250 people).
Dr. Dawkins is a well known author, ethologist and evolutionary biologist. He will be giving a lecture on his book The God Delusion. After the lecture will be a question and answer session.
This event was made possible through funding from the Richard Dawkins Foundation and the Center for Inquiry, as well as the UT Senate of College Councils. Thanks to everyone involved for making this happen! Thank you also to Dr. Dawkins for stopping by the University of Texas at Austin!
The lecture we hosted given by Dan Barker was a huge success! Thank you SSA and Freethinkers of UTA for making this event possible!! Please also see the blog on the Daily Texan article. We had approximately 70 people come to the lecture and we also went to Dog and Duck afterward. Lets definitely get some more lecturers in the future!!

We have recently received a monetary donation from the Atheist Community of Austin that will be going towards building an A-Frame for use on the UT campus, as well as a small vinyl banner for use during tabling on the West Mall. Thank you so much to the ACA for their very generous donation!! We really appreciate your support and we love what you do for our community.
One Austin community member has agreed to donate the funds to purchase a large 3ft by 15ft banner to put between the two poles facing Guadalupe street on the West Mall of campus. Thank you so much to Mr. Shumake for supporting our group so much. We really appreciate the interest and care you show to our group. We will be ordering the banners and creating the A-Frame soon and have them all up by next semester.
We are now affiliated with the Secular Student Alliance!
We have a new t-shirt design and we'd like you UT students to sign up for a t-shirt if you want one. As soon as we get a count of how many want a shirt, we'll price them and get them made. See the pictures for the shirt design.
The Separation of Church and State rally on Saturday, Sept. 08 was a blast. There were several atheist groups from across Texas in attendance and a number of great speakers. We did meet the UTSA group, Atheist Agenda, and with the Secretary of the Board of the Secular Student Alliance, Rebecca Robinson. There are some exciting things that may come from the recent contacts our group has made. At this rally, we also were able to get the last signatures to begin the group. After attending the new student group orientation, Atheist Longhorns will be official and we can start meetings and decide what kind of activities we'd all like to do.
In the spirit of local Austin atheist groups, this group defines atheism as the lack of belief in any gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism. One doesn't have to be non-religious to be an atheist. Take for example the original buddhists. There are negatively asserted atheists and positively asserted atheists in that the former says they don't know whether there is such things as gods (people who use the term agnostic fall under this category of negatively asserted atheist) and the latter says they know there is no such thing as gods. Some people like to use the term freethinker, and this is a shortening of freethinking atheist, or someone who uses no dogma to base their judgements: a non-religious atheist. Because atheism is such a broad term, even broader than the term secular, you can see how it encompases a large number of people. Not all atheists believe in the same set of ideas. Most people don't understand what a huge group atheists really are. These terms aren't necessarily what everyone uses, but give you a generalized idea of basic atheism. This group intends to educate around campus based on these definitions.
This website also has good insites on the basics of atheism: Atheist Community of Austin FAQ
Although a great deal of atheists are non-religious, this group doesn't focus on converting religious people or going out of our way to debate people or destroy religious functions. We're simply here as a presence of atheism on campus, serving as a social group to the UT atheist community and educating the rest of the campus. As a group, we're here to show the world that "atheist" is not a bad word. Atheists are good people, just like everyone else. Go positive atheism!!!
This group will be for all atheists on the UT Austin campus. I'm hoping we'll meet once every two weeks or so and build this group to a good size. Atheist groups have come and gone in the past, but I'm going to be at UT for a long time, so hopefully it will stay alive after I leave.
Donations to help the group buy signs and advertisement space around the campus would be greatly appreciated by the group:
