Speed skating is not required*, but fun and a spirit of camaraderie are mandatory. * Inline skates are not required either: A2A was originally skated exclusively on quad skates, and quad skaters are still welcome at Athens-to-Atlanta.

A2A offers a new criterium-style 10K on a closed, short-circuit course (approximately 1 mile, wholly within Piedmont Park), a 38 Mile Marathon-Plus, a 52.4 Mile Double-Marathon and the classic 87 Mile Ultra Marathon.
Ask anyone that has ever skated or volunteered for Athens-to-Atlanta: this is their favorite - there is no other skate event like this in the world.

Matthew Whitty was unable to skate the A2A event on October 7, 2007 do to a stress fracture in his foot. The stress fracture accorded during training for this event and several others. Matthew's Therapist and Coaches did not think his foot was strong enough to skate 87 miles. Matthew is starting to train again and will be more then ready to compete in the A2A next year on October 12, 2007. Matthew is very sorry he could not make this event and is looking forward to a healthy season and participating in next years event.
