OAKLAND — Mayor Ron Dellums sees some renewed hope for the A's chances of staying in Oakland.
Two weeks after A's owner Lew Wolff said he wasn't sure if he would succeed in building a proposed 32,000-seat stadium in Fremont, Dellums told the Tribune he's prepared to do anything "within reason" to keep the A's in town.
His remarks came as players took warm-ups before their game at McAfee Coliseum Wednesday. Dellums was at the ball park for the annual Silence the Violence event, aimed at curbing crime and increasing economic opportunity in the city.
"There are a number of 'ifs' in order for the A's to stick around, because they've already made that deal down in Fremont," Dellums said. "The question is whether that deal will stick or not. And I've said to (Wolff), if there's anything we can do that's within reason, we're prepared to do it. "
A day after Wolff expressed doubt about the Fremont deal last month, however, the owner said that although he's frustrated at the pac
How bout those A's? Did you honoestly expect to see us in 1st place(at this point) back when we traded Swisher? I'm loving our pitching, and Emil Brown's Tour Of Destruction continues on...All Star? I think so! Are you guys going to any games next homestand?
whats up guys. love the show. great win tonight against the twins. Gaudin was lights out. Our offense was a little slow tonight but we got the job done with 3 runs on 5 hits. Great to see mike sweeney get his first homer or the season as an Athletic tonight. And speaking of sweeney, according to ray fosse the A's are getting frank thomas back. Not sure what leaves sweeney or cust as the DH's. What are your thoughts on how we're gonna make room for thomas. Buck was also placed on the DL putting our new pick up Rajai Davis from the Giants. He's a legit player according to a few giants fans I talked to. Well thats about all I got for now. I'll leave you guys to it to discuss this. GO A's!!!
I was very impressed by the way our boys held it down in both Japan games. Our pitching looks great (excluding street). Rich Harden looked amazing striking out 9 through 5 innings work. Casilla and Embree were straight up FILTHY. Street didnt fair too well, but im sure he'll be alright. Our defense looks solid Hannahan made a couple amazing plays at 3rd. Our offense looks decent and our hitters had both pitchers on the ropes. K-Suz even notched his first stolen base, I STILL CANT BELIEVE WE STOLE A BASE!!! LOL. It was nice to see Emil Brown rake one after blowing the opening game with his base running blunder. I know this isnt really organized but since this isnt English class I figured you guys wouldnt mind! I'm really looking forward to the REAL opening night this tuesday in OAKLAND. Lets go A's!!
The games in Japan were actually real fun to watch, this team is pretty fun to watch as well. I don't know if you guys stayed up or woke up early, but a lot of us bleacher bums got together and watched the games. I think opening in Japan was a cool idea, but the timing was pretty bad. I think this team will turn some heads, and open peoples eyes as far as our future goes.
By the way, ESPN's coverage is extremely biased and Dice K looks like a Emo Panda....see you guys opening night!
hey i have a few questions, possibly for your next show.
1. not exactly about the a's, and it may just be me confused but could you guys explain the rule 5 draft? im super confused about it.
2. the a's just announced todd linden is not going to japan, personally i didnt like this decision, he impressed me and i was hoping he was going to make the team. a few people on the a's message boards have been saying that its his fault he opened his big mouth and thats the reason he didnt make the team. I disagree with that i think what he says shouldnt affect his chances of making the team. what do you guys think?
3. what are your guys views of mike sweeney's role on the club?
thank you for the bday love! heres to a fresh start and a winning season!no matter how old i get... i will never stop bleeding the green and gold.. unless they decide to change colors =)
The Kotsay trade doesn't surprise me at all, A's fans should realize that after trading Swisher that nobody is untouchable. If we're going to fully rebuild, then we might as well just get rid of everyone. There's no point of having a 30+ year old center fielder that has been battling back injuries with a bunch of 19 year old kids. The only thing that surprised me is that we didn't trade Joe Blanton first. A's fans should not be surprised by any more trades this offseason, Chavez should be gone by the deadline after he builds some sort of trade value if in fact he gets it through his head that when the bases are loaded he should hit the ball, and so should Street and Crosby(hopefully). All the A's groupies may as well get to know our youth because the team you knew that reached the ALCS is gone. I know you guys wern't the biggest Kotsay fans, but I am going to miss yelling out "2 Down Kotsay" from the RF Bleachers and him doing his traditional two out hand gesture.
and why is Dan Johnson on the team? Just trade the guy for a dollar dog or something...
Thank u for ur feedback, u and Charles are welcome to discuss it anytime. It's good to know that there's true A's fans organizing online and i'll be sure to check back more often. Peace! -MJ
Thanks again for your input, and we wanted to make sure it was fine to discuss your comments and thoughts on the show before we actually did it. Our episode on the Swisher stuff should be coming out soon, so stay tuned!
ANYTIME!
I do understand the rebuilding process and that you gotta give up some good players to get that young talent. Knowone wants a bad player for good young talent and since Nick Swisher is young, cheap and talented he is high on the market. With that said, how does the Nick swisher trade and the players received compare to the Haren trade and the players we received.
This trade blows monkey balls!! I just found out literally rite now at 1am. I've been checking the A's site daily, and never expected to see this deal. Haren was expected but Swish, the face of the A's being traded is really disappointing. Management has thrown in the towel to the 08 season before it even starts. I am not a fan of rebuilding because its basicaly putting a minor league team on the field for a season or two. Whats the point of going to an A's game this year? This sux! -Edgar
This Swisher fan is NOT a happy person today. I'm completely shocked and devestated by Swish being traded! Athletics Fan for life, but such a big Swisher fan I have to follow where he goes too. Unless of course he goes to the Angels!!!
GOOD LUCK SWISHER, SEE YOU WHEN YOUR NEW TEAM ROLLS INTO OAKLAND!
lemme speak 2 all my a's fans 4 a minute, because without putting this all in perspective this is a horrible horrible day. There are 2 main reasons why Oakland has been making major moves. 1)The Angels. 2)The A's are moving and aren't going to be able to contend before they move to fremont, so Beane has had to do the toughest thing for the franchise in the long term and get rid of a lot if not all of the oakland fan favorites to hopefully have a new identity and talent pool around 2009-2010. When ur relocating u slash payroll and rebuild and although there may be NO REASON AT ALL to get excited about the a's next year, at least they're doing what they need to do and not standing around. I just wish I felt better about it...
yes, its sad to see swisher gone, i enjoy watching him play knowing he will always give his hearts out on the field. but with that said, i also understand why the a's would do this. we are not in a market like sf, la, or even ny. its impossible to have success every single year with our payroll. we've been spoil that the a's are as good as they are in recent years. with the payroll that we had, we shouldnt be this competitive. if it takes one or two year of rebuilding in exchange for 4 or 5 years of success in this market? i would do that anytime. billy beane know his stuff, remember that off season when we traded for mulder and hudson? everyone is bashing beane and the team? yea, we had two great season after that... so lets give him some credit.
Please pass this on to your fellow A's fans that support the movement to keep the A's in Oakland:
