Atlanta Swamp Opera Cajun band grew out of an old-timey contra dance band back in the late 1980's or early 1990's. The original Atlanta Swamp Opera played a mixture of cajun and zydeco dance music at dances and festivals all over the southeast. While trying to stay close to traditional cajun styles, we became known for twin fiddles and, especially, the female vocal harmonies that were rare in Cajun music at that time. In its prime, ASO played venues such as the local stage at the 1996 Olympics, the Ft. Lauderdale Cajun/Zydeco Crawfish Festival, First Night Atlanta (several years), City Stages (Birmingham, AL), Dance Vortex (many years), Big Spring Jam (Huntsville, AL), and La Poussiere club in Breaux Bridge, LA. The original ASO folded at the end of 2001 to take on other projects and later reformed with four core original members and some new members. We still have the female vocal harmonies, but now often have an electric guitar instead of the second fiddle. The new ASO has played at dances and private functions throughout the southeast, and in December 2007 was honored to be the only band from outside of Louisiana to play at the New Orleans Cajun Dancers' NEW ORLEANS CAJUN & ZYDECO DANCE FEST held at Tipitinas.
