MY NEW BOOK 'MY POETIC LICENCE' IS OUT NOW! And you can get it, along with all my other stuff, from this online shop
AND THEY'RE ALL HERE TOO (well, the CDs anyway, plus individual tracks of course)
Influences
Hilaire Belloc and Roger McGough from the world of poetry...John Cooper Clarke for proving it was possible to stand up at punk gigs and do it..but my
main poetic influence and inspiration comes from my wife Robina, who will always expect better from me! And from the lyrics of the bands/songwriters I enjoy, details of which you'll find on the other site.
Sounds Like
You're listening to it! Or if for some reason you're not: in poetic terms, if I'm talking about cherry blossom, I mean boot polish.
Yo! I’m the MC of ranting rebel poetry!
I know my history and my identity
I’m independent, a red cottage industry
DIY from here to eternity...
Now let me tell you what’s been going on:
I take inspiration from centuries long gone
Oral tradition of sedition, that’s my position -
No court jester with a tame disposition!
Poetic licence? 26 years I’ve had one
And they don’t come easy, they’re not given out for fun
You have to earn it, work and sweat and move -
Not get stuck in a dead poet bore groove.
I earned mine in dirty scummy punk clubs
Rock gigs, arts centres, festivals and dodgy pubs
And yes, once or twice I’ve had to fight -
But when a fascist hits a poet, the poet’s doing something right!
So listen up, this MC’s here to stay
Wild all those years ago and still fired up today
I love words and I’ve got this message for you:
Poetry’s not boring - though some poets bore you...
And I have to say that some poets bore me.
They’re about as fun as a week on the lavatory.
Dull and pretentious, playing the Art Game -
Real problem is they give the rest of us a bad name.
But I’m in the forward line, down there in the scrum.
Tedious whining poets - up your bum!
Now some of the critics think my stuff’s no good
But I earn my living at it - those jerks never could...
Yes, as you see, I’m a little bit bolshy too -
But that’s just one of the ways I want to get through
Sometimes it’s cerebral, dry, esoteric wit
Sometimes it’s loud and wild and hard and rude as shit!
I love words and I love ‘em in the red and raw
I like to use them in ways they’ve not been used before
Want you to laugh and want you to think as well -
Bollocks to TV - this is live, as live as hell!
Oral tradition - the real origins of poetry.
Attila the Stockbroker - ranting rebel MC.
Dean of the Social Surrealist University.
Welcome to my wild poetic journey!
I set up my initial MySpace site in March 2006, and because it's a music site, I decided to put mostly songs on there. But the majority of my gigs are solo, half my set at these is performance poetry/spoken word and many people know me first and foremost as a poet.... so I've decided to establish a separate site for the poems. Here they are! I'll keep changing them regularly.
If you'd like to read my biog and blog, hear the songs and the odd poem and check out my gig list, please go to my longer-established music site at
myspace.com/attilastockbroker. You can get there easily by clicking on my picture in the first 'friend' space below. That's also the place to leave messages, gig enquiries etc, though feel free to beome a 'friend' at this one if you like and spread the word! It doesn't make sense to duplicate all the info on here and in any case, I do over 100 gigs a year, have a very full life and simply haven't got time!
And of course, my original website www.attilathestockbroker.com has the biggest archive of all....
Cheers everyone!

TWENTY ONE SEVEN PROMOTIONS PRESENT… ATTILA THE STOCKBROKER
LIVE @ ORANGE STREET MUSIC CLUB CANTERBURY FRIDAY 16TH MAY 8.00PM FIVE POUNDS ON THE DOOR Sharp tongued, high energy, social surrealist rebel poet and songwriter. His themes are topical, his words hard-hitting, his politics unashamedly radical. Inspired by the spirit and the ‘Do It Yourself’ ethos of punk rock, and above all by The Clash and their overtly radical, political stance, he started as a punk bass player in 1977 and took the name Attila the Stockbroker in 1980, blagging spots for his poems and songs in between bands at punk gigs. He quickly got a couple of John Peel radio sessions, a deal with London independent label Cherry Red Records and before very long was on the cover of the UK music magazine ‘Melody Maker’. He hasn’t looked back since!
Attila has done about 100 gigs a year since 1982, over 2700 in total, visiting 19 countries, and has published 4 books of poems and over 20 LPs/CDs. In the UK and other English speaking countries he mainly performs solo poems and songs, in mainland Europe mostly with his band Barnstormer, which combines his hard hitting lyrics and what he calls ‘Renaissancecore’ – a melodic punk sound with added violin, mandola and recorders, somewhere between a 16th century peasant band and The Clash!
Thanks for the add! It was great to meet you in Bristol the other Sat. I learnt a lot from that class. Look forward to meeting up with you again sometime.
Gordon.
p.s. I think my team (Leeds) are carrying their fair share of luck this season, although i have to say, long may it last :-)
Oi Attila! What is happenin to your song; Every Time I eat Vegetables?.. I can only download it up to 240kb and then the downloadin stops.. I'd like to say: RUPERT F*CK YOU! (And we will do just that)!!
Good to meet you via myspace.
Hope people can make it to the Steve Lake (Zounds) acoustic gig in Leicester tonight.
