To list all the styles of music and different artists that I'm influenced by would take up this whole page. I can't help but be influenced by a beautiful melody, a heart grabbing lyric, or a singers voice that gives me goosebumps, no matter the style or genre. I'm captivated by artists like Julie London, Joni Mitchell, Aretha, Faith Hill, Diana Krall, James Brown, Al Green, Carole King, Otis Redding, James Taylor, Eva Cassidy, Bonnie Raitt, and the list could go and on.
I spent most of my early childhood living off the coast of Georgia on a small island called St. Simons. It's one of my favorite places to visit and I hope to get a house there someday, a writing retreat if you will.
I come from a very artistic family; my dad is a professional photographer and my mom is a painter, so it only seems fit that I would become a singer-songwriter. My mom always loved music, so there was always a lot of it that filled our house.
I moved to a small farm town in Kentucky when I was in elementry school and lived there till my freshman year of high school. It was a really small town and we lived way, way out in the country. I'm an only child so I grew to have a pretty big imagination. I spent most of my time writing poems, short stories, lyrics, listening to music, and reading. I credit this time in my life to shaping my need to be a singer-songwriter.
At around the age of 8, I started writing lyrics and poems more seriously, and began to get lost in the whole creative writing experience. I would take my "Play Skool" tape recorder and record myself singing melodies.
I moved to Nashville with my family before my freshman year of high school. During high school, I performed in talent shows and school plays and continued writing songs. I really got bit by the performing bug when I had just gotten my learner's permit and "borrowed" my parents car, when they were out one night, and went down to the Bluebird Cafe. I had always wanted to go there and see the songwriters in the round so I just up and left and went down there. I remember being in awe and saying to myself that's what I want to do for the rest of my life. I kinda of feel bad about the "borrowing" my parents car part but everything happens for a reason.
At 16, I begged my dad for a guitar and the following Christmas there was one waiting for me under the tree.
From that point on, I wrote, wrote, and wrote. In the beginning, most of the songs weren't great, but as I continued, I became more comfortable with myself as a writer and started to discover who I was as an artist. I developed my own style very naturally, and continued to work hard at writing songs.
To all of you who have become part of this fan base community and have come out to the shows and have supported this music, thank you!
Love, Audrey
