August Burns Red, a Cristian metalcore band from Lancaster, Pennsylvanian, released their third album in hopes of repeating the success of their eleven track recording released in 2005, Thrill Seeker. The outcome; Messengers, released Thursday, September 6th, 2007.
During the hiatus between albums, August Burns Red, or ABR, dropped Thrill Seeker vocalist, Josh McManness, and bassist, Jordan Tuscan, in hopes of gaining a new, more brutal sound to their Cristian metal scene. Although their sound seamed to change for the better, their Old Navy-style look stays the same; well known for putting on shows wearing flip flops and other casual wear. Accompanied by their two new members, ABR starts their quest early 2006 to record a ground shaking, chart topping record.
The album starts off with the high pitched scream of All That Remains' Phil LaBonte, and continues with strong deep vocals by new vocalist, Jake Luhrs, revealing a sound never heard from by ABR. Drummer, Matt Greiner, continues to show why he is one of the best with over 20 breakdowns in the current album. The album is built and engineered nicely and seams to 'flow' from start to finish. Lines from their religious, touching lyrics seam to play themselves over and over in your head all day, day after day of listening to this album.
When it's all said and done, ABR really did it well on this one. With a new sound on every song, it's almost impossible to find a weak point point to Messengers. The technical breakdowns, clean, heavy riffs and drums, and improved vocals keep you headbanging for each track the whole time through. Songs that grow on you promise that this album won't just be put away for a long, long time.
My final rating: 10/10
Key tracks- "Back Burner", "Composure", "An American Dream", "Redemption"

Messengers, the second record to drop from the minds and hands of Lancaster, PA fivesome August Burns Red is more than just a collection of 11 raging metal songs that ravage the ears of their listeners with technical skill and immense passion. The record is, in fact, not only a musical collaboration, but also a lyrical one, where every member of the band contributed to the lyrical content with their own thoughts, ideas and messages. Hence the record’s intriguing title.
August Burns Red, who initially formed in March of 2003, began this writing process almost immediately after finishing their shattering debut, Thrill Seeker, at the end of 2005, collecting ideas to follow up that disc with something even bigger. The five members of August Burns Red spent the entire year and half they were touring in support of Thrill Seeker penning the songs that landed on Messengers, eventually entering the studio in February 2007 in Nashville with Tue Madsen (The Haunted, Himsa, Dark Tranquility, Extol), with whom the fivesome co-produced the album. The group spent the month refining the tracks into the aggressive, pounding songs you hear on the finished album.
The complexity of August Burns Red’s songwriting is apparent throughout, a clear indication of a band with rabid ambition and a burgeoning talent for crafting tight, compelling songs. Longtime fans fear not, though; Messengers is still the product of the same intense band who continue to blow the minds of everyone lucky enough to witness their memorable live show.
