   About August
AUGUST: The Migration

August is best described as a bowl of folk-flavored fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt. A lot of people don’t like fruit-on-the-bottom, but that’s because they put it in their mouths instead of their ears. We think you’ll enjoy tender morsels of bluegrass, jazz, Kraütrock and even regular rock, all suspended in a smooth folksy paste.

Each band member offers a different set of music-making ingredients. Louis Weeks brings a meticulous attention to crafting meaningful lyrics and memorable melodies. Ben Goldstein is obsessed with keeping things tight and danceable, in case he ever learns how to dance. Gabe Donnay sprinkles in flavorful ear candy with whatever instrument is closest. David Summers is really chill, and knows how to say the words “Jelly Baby” in a funny voice.

August was formed in 2005 in Baltimore, Maryland while the musicians were still impressionable young high school students. Although the pursuit of knowledge has since scattered the band members across the East Coast at various fine learning institutions, August continues to write, record and perform on a regular basis. In 2007, August released its first full-length album. The Migration, the cherished product of a bleary-eyed, marathon three-week recording session, is available now. Check it out!

Abraham Maslow defined a hierarchy of needs to be:
1) Biological and Physiological (water, food, shelter, air, sex, etc.)
2) Safety (security, law and order, stability, etc.)
3) Belonging and love (family, affection, community, etc.)
4) Esteem (self-esteem, independence, prestige, achievement, etc.)
5) Self-Actualization (self-fulfillment, personal growth, realizing personal potential, etc.)

The reason why many of us in today's world are walking around lost, is that we over-emphasize on the hierarchial order, to the extent that the last on the list is too minuscule for our vision. Yet like major and minor elements/nutrients are essential for the survival of every living thing so are these needs. The emphasis should not be on the hierarchy, but on the fact that all needs are essential for a well rounded being.

"A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be at peace with himself. What a man can be, he must be. This is the need we may call self-actualization ... It refers to man's desire for fulfillment, namely to the tendency for him to become actually in what he is potentially: to become everything that one is capable of becoming ..."

Our institutions of higher learning have prepared it's citizens to become good producers and consumers. The college graduate has a large specialized database that allows that individual to quickly enter the corporate world as a useful cog in the machine. The results display themselves in our thriving high standard of living, high technology corporate driven life styles.

This one-sided preparation thus leaves the individual deficient in that last essential element necessary for life; Self Actualization, or what I refer to as SOUL LIBERTY. The negative effects are being seen in a growing number of young adults today: As we become more and more productive, true happiness is on a decline, self-fulfillment remains a dream for most, and for an increasing numbe
