“Aunty Richard…is putting some of rock’s urgency into contemporary jazz.”
(Drum Media, August 2008)
“…big bulldozing riffs that threaten to flatten you as you listen.”
(Sydney Morning Herald, September 2008)
"pushing frenetic ideas skillfully interwoven with the melody...interspersing diversely serene passages"
(The Australian, November 2008, 4 stars)
"Sydney's Aunty Richard displayed a powerful sense of drama and dynamics as they veered between cruisy, blues-drenched grooves and hard-hitting grunge rock."
(The Age, May 2009) -live review
“From opener Curve’s smooth grooves to the thudding beats of the title track, ‘Leaf Blower’ shows strong musicality, moving confidently between jazz, rock and funk… the boys really do know what they’re doing.” (Music Feeds, August 2008)
"Aunty Richard seemed to be pretty sprightly — the sort of energetic, vivacious aunt who might take you to the circus and leave with one of the jugglers...definitely a jazz quartet that would have broad appeal."
(AusJazz Blog, May 2009) -live review
“…fluid improvising and subtle rock styled rhythms conjured by Aunty Richard. This dependable combination is an enjoyable one… the crossover appeal of Aunty Richard’s debut album doesn’t mean that one style dominates over another…” (Canberra Times, August 2008)
Aunty Richard brings together jazz, rock and electronic elements with a focus on composition and melody. The players are vibrant and assured, creating an edgy and engaging momentum. The tenor flutters, growls, blares and rasps; it shrieks in horror, bounces happily and cries with anguish. Hooks are shared between bass and sax and the drums solo explosively.
Inspired by cities and urban life, "Leaf Blower" is a response to contemporary issues and world events. While some songs specify Los Angeles, "Leaf Blower" speaks to any landscape characterised by disconnection, yet where hope remains in riots and poetry found in corners.
Aunty Richard achieves an uncanny, measured sound that maintains a live, spontaneous feel. "Leaf Blower" is an album that never lets you get too comfortable. There is calm, but anarchy is soon to follow; the band provides pause for reflection one moment and a call-to-arms the next. Sometimes desolate, more often manic – "Leaf Blower" is the soundtrack for every city.

Hey you snooty jazz impostors... unfortunatley will be busy with pre-production for a wanky art prog recording happening next week, though might catch you at one of the five million shows you've got coming up there! ;)
My first Cd "Blue Like A Jazz Note" has just been released and is now available for purchase from my site. This album represents the culmination of years of hard work and a dream that has been alive in me from my earliest days. It includes 15 great jazz standards by some of the world's greatest composers. I hope you'll come and have a listen.
