Once Upon A Time In The Boondocks Yo!'s Interests
General
The most beautifulest things in the world.

(though she needs some more feeling in her spittage), K-Os, Devin the Dude, Sade, Ray Barretto, Minnie Riperton, Mongo Santamaria, Jaga Jazzist, Common, classic Earth Wind and Fire, classic Isleys, Jeremy Steig, RATM, Radiohead, Bjork, Nine Inch Nails, Goblin, Mike Ladd, Buju Banton, Xzibit (circa "At the Speed of Life"), Vincent Gallo when he's not talking racist/anti-Semetic/Reaganist bullshit but actually making oddly tender music, D'Angelo, ATCQ, Bebel Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, Bad Brains, Beastie Boys, a lot of mid 80s-mid 90s Hiphop in general, old Go-Go (Trouble Funk, Junkyard, Backyard, Northeast Groovers, and, of course, the Godfather Chuck Brown), DC native Marvin Gaye, a million other sounds to make you think, move, love, fight, and fuck
Movies
The Lives of Others, Planet B-Boy, Le fils, This Is England, Murderball, Manda Bala, Darwin's Nightmare, Cool Hand Luke, City of Men, Nothing But A Man, Amandla, Half Nelson, Anchorman, To Kill a Mockingbird, Game of Death (Bruce's Cut), Enter the Dragon, Born into Brothels, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Kung Fu Hustle, The Battle of Algiers, Music is the Weapon, X-Men 2, Black Orpehus, Dancer in the Dark, Akira, Style Wars, Wild Style, The Freshest Kids, Breath Control, Dark Days, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, Napoleon Dynamite, Bjork's Volumen, Just to Get a Rep, La haine, Fight Club, Ghost in the Shell, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Requiem for a Dream, Jails Hospitals & Hiphop, Kill Bill Vol. 2, The Matrix 1 (sequels were bullshit!), Lumumba, Sin City, American History X, Scratch, Life+Debt, H2 Worker, Rockers, Dogville, Control Room, 28 Days Later, Taxi Driver, Pulp Fiction, M, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Trainspotting, Ghost Dog, Coffee & Cigarettes, The Weather Underground, Life & Debt, Bamboozled, Better Luck Tomorrow, Office Space, Hardboiled, The Killer, Hero, Lone Wolf & Cub, Lady Snowblood, Hana-bi, A Clockwork Orange, Lost in Translation, Ghostbusters, Rashomon, City of God, Juice, Coming to America, Friday, Teen Wolf, amateur erotica (ahem)...anything with realistic relationship dynamics, political resistance, great music, subversive humor, visual brilliance, and/or mindbending.
Television
The Wire! No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain. Bizarre Foods. Top Chef. (Maybe you see a theme here...) The Daily Show and Colbert Report. City of Men (DVD) was good until the last season...Lost has all but jumped the shark--are they making this up as they go along? I enjoy Charlie Rose and Tavis Smiley when I catch em along with other random jawns off PBS. Iron Chef is educational and occasionally mouth-watering. Otherwise I like all those funny shows that ain't on no more: Chappelle's Show, The Office (UK), Mr. Show, Strangers with Candy, House of Buggin', the random Martin or New York Undercover episode every once-in-a-while.
Books
BloodBeats Vol. 2, Shortcomings (Adrian Tomine), Incognegro, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Hamburger Eyes, Can't Stop Won't Stop, Basquiat, Rakim Told Me, The Art of Getting Over, The Dead Emcee Scrolls, pretty much any work by Octavia E. Bulter, Drown/Negocios, mad film books, Lies My Teacher Told Me, People's History of the United States, Street Market, Scrawl, The Wretched of the Earth, Revolutionary Rehearsals, The God of Small Things, The Farming of Bones, Breath Eyes Memory, Spidertown, Down These Mean Streets, Fight Club, poetry anthologies, Marc Baptiste photography books, too many magazines (Wax Poetics, Juxtapoz, Giant Robot, URB, Complex, Movie Maker, XLR8R, that piece of shit Vice, ego trip (RIP) back issues, Essence off the coffee table when nobody's looking, etc.,)
Heroes
The freedom fighters who died for me to be here, whether their names grace the pages of written history or not. My Mom who's my balance and my maternal Grandmother who's my heart and history--I'd die for them. DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash, and all the other Hiphop forefathers and foremothers. Every other fuck-you hero (peace to Glen Friedman) who rocked their pariah status like freak chic.

The world is small, specially dc. I was at both of those shows. TOTR are coming again on June 28th with Ladytron at the Merriweather Post Pavillion. Any other good shows coming I should know about?
Your feedback is much appreciated. We are such a small press that getting the book out into the world is a word-of-mouth undertaking, and sometimes the words don't reverse course back to us so we know how the work is received in the world. You're one of the very first people to hit me back with commentary, and your words were right on time.
