This fundraiser, consisting of a silent art auction, concert and dancing will support 15 underprivileged Texas high school students and their teachers from YES Prep take part in Peace Corps and Habitat for Humanity projects in West Africa this summer.
The event will take place Friday, May 11th at the Texas Womens' Federation at 24th and San Gabriel (2312 San Gabriel). The fundraiser will be an evening full of dancing and art with music by The Seth Walker Band, the UT Afropop Ensemble Easy Motion Tourist, hip hop group Blacklisted Individuals, and more! The pieces in the art auction have been donated by local and national artists, galleries and stores and include paintings, prints, jewelry, sculpture and pottery. The proceeds from the silent art auction and cover charge going to resources needed to complete the projects in Ghana and airfare for the group. Tickets are $12.
The Peace Corps has invited us to the villages of Wamfie and Kranka, Ghana. We will build a community center for youth, many of whom suffer from or have lost parents to AIDS. We'll also help build homes, create sustainable alternative livelihood projects, conduct health and sanitation classes and teach HIV/AIDS classes. The teens going to Ghana are students at YES Prep, public high schools that exist to increase the number of Texas low-income kids who graduate from a four-year college prepared to compete in the global marketplace and committed to improving disadvantaged communities.
