AustinCynic's Interests
|
| General | Writing, dogs, seeing what my son will do next. | | Music | Most recent CD purchases: Back In Black by Amy Winehouse; Icky Thump by The White Stripes; We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, by Modest Mouse; The Meanest of Times, by The Dropkick Murphys. Also, Duffy's single "Mercy" has to be one of the most insanely catchy tunes released in forever. Thank goodness it's a great song! | | Movies | Movies? I've got a baby at home! Kristi and I did manage to see Shrek the Third a couple of weeks ago, and plan to see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix its opening weekend. | | Television | My guilty pleasure is Fox's Hell's Kitchen. Otherwise, it's the Animation Domination Sunday bloc, Heroes and House. I also really dig the new Doctor Who (being a fan from way back). And my newest addiction? Season one of HBO's Big Love, which I'm currently watching on DVD. Nothing like polygamy for dose of dramatic tension. | | Books | Plugging right now: White House Ghosts: Presidents and Their Speechwriters by Robert Schlesinger. Rob's come a long way since we slung burgers and pizza in Hamlin at Middlebury College. He's a keen observer and excellent writer, and getting great reviews. |

About me:
I'm a proud husband and papa. I'm also a writer that has had a number of short stories published, all for Eric Flint's 1632 alternate history story universe. My short story "Trials" is in an anthology of stories edited by Mr. Flint, Ring of Fire 2, released in January and currently available at any major bookstore. I've published other stories for this story universe in Baen's "e-zine" The Grantville Gazette, available from Baen's Webscriptions service or you can go to The Grantville Gazette for current and previous issues. Click on my author's biography and you can see my stories!
I've been married to my beautiful wife Kristi since 1996, and our son Michael was born January 23, 2007. Right now, being parents is keeping us both pretty busy! We moved to Austin shortly after we got married so I could attend graduate school, and Austin's been our home ever since.

Who I'd like to meet:
I've had the privilege to meet several writers and performers whom I admire, thanks to working as a volunteer reader with the Austin Film Festival, including Neil Gaiman, Christopher McQuarrie, Mike Judge, Ernie Hudson and others. One of the great things about AFF is that thanks to Austin's laid-back vibe and the relaxed atmosphere, the guests really want to be there, and I think that's reflected in their interaction with festival attendees.
One person I really want to meet--in person--is Harlan Ellison. I've been a fan of Harlan's writing since I was about 13 years old, but more than that, he's the writer that made me want to be a writer. I've spoken to him on the phone once but that only whetted my appetite!
I'd also really love to meet George Takei, especially as I consider him to be not only a talented actor but a courageous man; and Masi Oka, because anyone that can be both the star of a television show and a special effects consultant for Industrial Light & Magic is someone I've got to get to know!
