About me: The Austin Swing Syndicate is a non-profit, all-ages organization devoted to the care of the Austin Swing and Lindy Hop scene. We hold a weekly swing dance in Austin every Thursday at the Fed (24th and San Gabriel) from 8pm-midnight. There are free lessons from 8:15-9:15. $5 for Non-members and $2 for members.
Does anyone live in the Round Rock area (near the Dell Diamond) who'd like some company/gas money for the ride down to Austin this Thursday? I'm nice! I can banter on a number of subjects... like knees!
First, Will from Lamberts, the restaurant where The Jitterbug Vipers play every Tuesday (good dance floor), wants us to find out if there is an interest in dancers coming out on Tuesday if we star at 9:30 or 10:00 PM instead of 7 PM. If you are interested, let me know and I’ll tell Will and we’ll try it once on February 5 (Fat Tuesday). It will be posted on our Myspace site (http://www.myspace.com/jitterbugviper) or in my e-mails if it’s a go.
Second, a local video camera man and a local light man want to do a short, MTV type (sort of) video on The Jitterbug Vipers. They want to do this video mainly to show what they can do (and we think they’d talented!). We’re not paying or getting paid. The time and place are still up in the air, but they definitely want some dancers in the video. It will be fun. The down side might be that you’ll be dancing over and over to the same tune and we’ll be lip-syncing it. The up side of course is that we’ll all be minor-stars in a darn good video and have a lot of fun making it happen. And we will probably keep going with some hot dace stuff after they get all the shots they want. If you are interested in being part of this, let me know. Please say yes.

The routines are ready, the music is mixed, the lighting is bigger and better then any burlesque show you ever saw in Austin and the ladies are HOT HOT HOT!!!!!! These girls are gonna blow you away. Hands down this is gonna be one of the biggest shows in town and were proud to premier it at Emo's Lounge - Pick up a T-Shirt, some Miss Maulie lucky playing cards and a Maverick Magic Set while your there!

The Jitterbug Vipers
You listen to The Jitterbug Vipers and you think you've been transported to a dim lit nightclub in 1940's Chicago where Billie Holliday and Wes Montgomery are jamming with Ray Brown. Period jazz, swing, whatever you want to call it, it's suave, cool, danceable, hot, sultry, sophisticated and beautiful, influenced by the 40s, Count Basie’s Rhythm section and Thai food. Ahhhh! Played by Texans?! Yeh, right! Well check it out. Close your eyes and you won't believe your ears. Emily Gimble, vocals (think Peggy Lee, Julie London, Dinah Washington) & piano; Slim Richey, guitar (dangerous); and Francie Meaux Jeaux, bass fiddle (most solid walking bass), with back-up guitar and vocals by Albanie Fallette.
Meaning & connotations:
Jitterbug – Another name for the Lindy Hop or swing dancing. Jitterbug music is the very danceable music from the 30s & 40s.
Vipers – Viper music is a special kind of swing music from the 30s & 40s which was played and sung by Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Louie Jordan, Bob Wills and the Ink Spots, to name only a few. Vipers were the ”cats” who inhaled.

Have those dance ants in your pants? Wanna meet other dance-inclined people? We have just what you need. Every Friday during the school year, the Swing Bums offer free swing dance lessons. We teach everything from six-count East Coast Swing to Charleston to Lindy Hop and everything in between. No experience is necessary; each beginner lesson starts from square one each week. If you don’t have a partner, never fear, we supply them for you. The environment is laid back so feel free to wear jeans and tennis shoes; just make sure you are comfortable enough to cut a rug. Whatcha waiting for?! Come give it a try!
Lesson Location:
Lessons are held on Trinity University campus in San Antonio, Texas. More specifically, we teach in the Stieren Dance Studio. This studio is extra spiffy cause it’s got a spring wood floor that is kind to old yoga injuries. The studio is on the entry level of Bell Center in room 301. For the first month or so of Fridays there will be signs in the Bell Center leading you to the room.
Beginner’s Lessons: 7:00-8:00pm
In this lesson we cover Charleston, Lindy Hop or East Coast depending on the week. It is very easy to come into this lesson off the street. If you have never swing danced before, we suggest you get to the lesson on time so as not to miss any of the groundwork.
Intermediate Lessons: ~8:30-9:30pm
These lessons are for those who feel fairly confident strutting their stuff. Sometimes we go over some of the lesser done dances like Balboa, Shag, 20’s Charleston, the Big Apple. Or sometimes we just work on perfecting the basic steps of our fundamental dances. Other lessons we teach you cool moves to whip out on the dance floor. So really it all depends on the week.
