The Australian Songwriters Association has a lot to offer people who create original music in Australia, from the grass roots amateur to experienced and published songwriters.
The ASA's annual Australian Songwriting Contest is the largest competition in the country, providing great prizes and industry exposure to all finalists.
Our services extend from personal assistance, to professional feedback on new material, and live performance opportunities for all original performers across Australia, via our network of Wax Lyrical events.
AIMS OF THE ASSOCIATION:
The aims of the association are:
• To celebrate the art of songwriting;
• To assist and encourage developing Australian songwriters
• To provide information and general advice to members;
• To create performance opportunities for members;
• To aid the professional development of members;
• To enable members to meet and/or exchange ideas and information
• To facilitate member transition into the established music industry;
• To facilitate delivery of member services at a National, State and Regional level;
• To salute our best songwriters at major industry events such as our National Awards Night.
HISTORY OF THE ASA:
The Association was founded in Melbourne, Australia in 1979 by businessman Tom Louch and recording engineer Rudy Brandsma, who saw the need for an organisation that would bring Australian songwriters together. Today the Association has a vibrant membership Australia-wide and enjoys an established and respected role within the music industry. The ASA's membership is diverse and embraces and explores all genres of music.
THE AUSTRALIAN SONGWRITING CONTEST:
The ASA's Australian Songwriting Contest began in 1979, and is Australia’s longest running national songwriting contest for professional and amateur songwriters. Songs are submitted on CD or via Sonicbids (more ecomonical option), and are judged by Music Industry experts on originality and craftsmanship. The song does not have to be performed by the songwriter, but it must be original and unpublished at the time of entry (i.e. the song must not be signed to a publishing company). The recording quality of material is not relevant to the judging process.
The 29th annual Australian Songwriting Contest 2009 contest is now open for entries. Go to www.asai.org.au for more information.
ASA MEMBERSHIP:
Membership must be in the name of an individual person. Membership available to Australian citizens and permanent Australian residents.
The Australian Songwriters Association is a national, not-for-profit, member organisation dedicated to the support of songwriters and their art, through providing avenues for encouragement and education of developing Australian songwriters, and recognition and promotion of our accomplished members.
EVENTS:
Wax Lyrical open mic. nights are currently held in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania. For further details, see the ASA website www.asai.org.au.
Wax Lyrical events provide a stage for the performance of original works by songwriters and poets, both developing and professional. All styles and genres are welcomed.
By appearing at Wax Lyrical, many songwriters are chosen for further opportunities such as gigs and ASA showcases. Audience feedback sheets allow audience members to write comments about each performance - these are then forwarded to the artist.
The ASA is working towards building a national Wax Lyrical network across every state and major regional centre in Australia. For further details, please check under the ASA website Contact Us tab for the contact details of your local Regional Coordinator.
At Wax Lyricals, artists can register on arrival, but it is preferred if you prebook with your Regional Coordinator. Original material only is to be played, in an allocated fifteen minutes of performance time (or 3 songs). The event is professionally hosted, and attention is paid to achieving quality audio and encouragement of audience response.
