Forgotten, an old, manual turntable sits slumbering in an attic, hidden beneath a thick coating of dust. Suddenly, the crackling sound of crumpled cellophane clears the moment. Hands slip a new black vinyl disc out of its cardboard covering and place it on the spindle. What emits from the speakers has the sound of experience enlivened by its interaction with the new and unique.
Austri Morra presents a new record on an old machine. Inspired by both traditional and progressive approaches to music and, especially, the interaction between them, they create songs that are engrossing both intellectually and emotionally. While familiar song structures and melodies are drawn upon, Austri Morra employs them as tools in building an engaging sound that is musically sophisticated. Pursuing this aesthetic they continue to play a variety of venues around the Philadelphia area. Their energetic live shows draw consistently expanding crowds and praise from fans, club owners, and those looking for something a little different.
Please also allow us to introduce Debbie....(no offense if your or your cousin's name is Debbie). Debbie is the embodiment of the first-level music listener. She is the rules that govern the basic human musical aesthetic. She is what makes us like or not some music at our earliest moments before we had any concept of what makes music good but just went whistling along to catchy melodies and bobbing our heads to the beat. Accordingly, Debbie also can represent the masses who, generally speaking, never move beyond music that caters to her instantly gratifying demands, short attention span, and familiar sound, such as what dominates popular music. Debbie is not evil; please don't misunderstand. She may try to sqeeze the life out of popular appreciation for unconventional ideas (can you imagine The Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Birds Of Fire" on the Billboard Top Ten today like it was in '73!??) and at times we may want to christen her face with bazookas, but there is a ton we can learn from her. And besides, unless you listen exclusively to avant-garde, you're at least some part Debbie.
Austri Morra strives to write music that transcends Debbie while not completely loosing her. Our philosophy and aesthetic is to create sound that is musically sophisticated, full of different ideas and musical integrity, while still engaging Debbie....for the most part. We want it all- your head and your heart. If we do this maybe we've made "good music". hope you like.
