Autobody: The Biography
Defining the shape of progressive metal to come Calgary, Alberta’s Autobody take their cues from some of the greatest thrash, rock and heavy metal acts of all time. Rising from the ashes of their former incarnation theR.A.C.E. vocalist/bassist Jerrod Maxwell-Lyster and lead/rhythm guitarist gRaeme McInnis joined forces with drummer Rob Shawcross to form the powerful three-piece known as AutoBody. Veterans of numerous musical misadventures. This unholy trinity of friends have generated an incredible buzz on the local scene and beyond; performing at indoor and outdoor festivals and appearing live on globally broadcast programs. Known for their shredding guitar riffs and pummeling percussion, AutoBody adhere to a classic hardcore aesthetic that dictates a no nonsense, cut to the chase approach to each of their unique compositions. Making the most of their new, sleeker, downsized personnel line-up the lads have been busily at work cooking up their full-length debut The Mean Length of Daylight, released on the band’s own label T.R.A.C.E. (The Revolt Against Cultural Extinction) Records. Exploding with 13 tracks of power "The Mean Length of Daylight" came to fruition as the result of two and half years of creative collaboration. Yet, in the end, according to guitarist Graeme McInnis, the essential pieces all fell into place as if they were simply meant to be. As easy to listen to as it was to orchestrate "The Mean Length of Daylight" serves as the perfect example of striking the right balance between intuitively constructed melodies and weightier rhythmic elements. This compelling fusion of beauty and brutality carries through to the album’s lyrical content, largely penned by Jerrod, which often alludes to the personal sacrifices and triumphs they have all experienced while paying their dues in blood, sweat and beers along the long and treacherous road to success. Describing the entire process of making "The Mean Length of Daylight" as “a complete revelation” the guys knew enough to entrust the live-off-the-floor recording of the band’s debut album "The Mean Length of Daylight" to the professionals at Calgary’s Night Deposit Studios where Jerrod mixed and edited the tracks alongside co producer Endre Lukasy. The boys recorded direct to tape, an old-school method of recording, but which gave them the rich ambience they so desired in fatting their thunderous three piece sound. The boys recorded on the same tape machine from Little Mountain recording studio in Vancouver that AC/DC, Metallica and Aerosmith recorded on for some extra metal mojo on the record! Then, it was off to New York where the final version was mastered at the legendary Sterling Sound. Impressing audiences and critics alike with the accessibility and, surprising positivity of their clean, unfettered sound, Autobody is utterly devoted to giving each of their performances one hundred and ten percent of their effort. A self-professed sport bike freak who gets his kicks at 200MPH, and admittedly a bit of a Mr. Hyde when he gets on stage, guitarist Graeme McInnis loves to show off his chops; making wild runs off the cuff while remaining ever conscious of his fellow bandmates. Similarly, vocalist/bassist Jerrod Maxwell-Lyster, an accomplished bass guitar player in his own right, is a master at setting the tone wielding his instrument like a devil with a bullwhip. His unique, memorable and melodic vocals surfing on top of the music really grab you, while steadfast pendulum Rob Shawcross drives them ever onward and upwards. From the hedonistic carnality of songs like “(she) PURRS on PILLS” to the soul searching resonance of “Dissolving”, AutoBody offers something for all tastes and age ranges. Sparking comparisons to old school rock and roll favourites such as Led Zepplin, Faith No More, and riff masters Black Sabbath, they undoubtedly possess a rare and winning amalgamation of technical prowess and artistic passion. Currently preparing to embark on a no-holds-barred romp through Southern California (again), which will see them fire up as many venues as humanly possible. AutoBody is eager to begin filming the video for their album’s first cut the gut-wrenchingly awesome “L.E.O.D.” (the living edge of destruction), a track purposefully written, and so needed now in our times of distress and burden. The theme is to inspire people to not "toe the line" but to break the chains that hold them down and know they can be free in this world of ultimate control. The time is now, for we truly are, on the Living Edge Of Destruction. Will AutoBody inspire you to change the world? Listen and find freedom.
