I am a singer/songwriter in the vein of Joni Mitchell. Ideally, that is not how I would describe myself (though I just did), but is how others tirelessly and without exception describe me. I would much rather be likened to Tom Waits, but like Popeye, I'yam what I'yam, so if you don't dig it, you can kiss my spinach-loving fist. ..* .. S Q U O N K O P E R A : I am also a graduate of Point Park University's Conservatory of Performing Arts with a BFA in Musical Theater. And as of November 2007, I am very lucky to be the singer in the crazy-fun avant garde theater troupe Squonk Opera. They are a top friend below and you should check them out here on myspace or at their website: http://www.squonkopera.org. They've performed all over the world, including a strange and adventure-filled stint on Broadway which is explored and explained in the documentary film, Squonkumentary. I am beside myself with glee to be among them. I've included our performance dates in my Upcoming Shows. Our new show, ASTRO-RAMA premiered in Schenley Plaza this past Fall as part of Pittsburgh's 250 year anniversary and Light Up Night. ..* .. As for my own music, I am spit-shining a new EP that my generous and talented friends have helped me put together. Midge Crickett plays cello, Ryan McMasters plays double bass, Chris Massa bangs the drums and John Michael Robinson backs me up with some lovely lead guitar. It was recorded and engineered by Dave Hidek at Treelady Studios in Turtle Creek. Look for a release party date this Spring.

Wishful Thinking Paintings by Victoria Cessna and David Wallace
Opening Friday, August 7, 2009. 6-10pm. Zombo Gallery. 4900 Hatfield St., Pittsburgh, PA 15201 www.zomboworld.com With live music by Slim and George Cessna with Rob Loveclutch. Showing through Friday, August 28.
With great excitement and a touch of wise doubt, local painters Victoria Cessna and David Wallace present ‘Wishful Thinking’ at Zombo Gallery on August 7, showcasing works that were completed by the artists over the past year.
Both artists have an affinity for using found imagery from bygone eras as inspiration for their work.
Cessna’s paintings explore the mysterious allure of the random snapshot and capture the quality of a long-forgotten photograph in paint. Her work takes these photographs out of their original context and suggests that there is more than meets the eye in these seemingly tranquil domestic environments.
As a graphic designer, Wallace has always been interested in the power of images and words in advertising. The pairing of innocent, naïve images from mid-century home magazine ads with more modern, direct text create a more complex world than those ‘50s magazines imply. New meanings are derived and questions are posed. As in Cessna’s work, things are not always as they seem or as we wish they could be.
Just as the phrase ‘Wishful Thinking’ can either cheerfully conjure a joyful hope or sarcastically imply a skeptical doubt, the work of Cessna and Wallace explores the duality of meaning inherent within mundane, everyday imagery.
‘Wishful Thinking’ opens Friday, August 7 at Zombo Gallery in Lawrenceville and continues through August 28. For more information on Zombo Gallery visit www.zomboworld.com To view David Wallace’s artwork visit www.salaczar.com To view Victoria Cessna’s artwork visit www.vicskitschn.com
Thanks! I'm still lovin' the photo of you--seriously! It shows such a great side of your personality. You're so much fun but can kick some serious ass musically. Rock on!
Kind of late notice, but we're doing a quasi-Pillow Project/listening party-type of thing at our space tomorrow night, with Dave Hidek, whom I believe you know. You should ditch your prior commitments and come.
