Like all the great artists,this is one band not content with simply standing still. Since the outset, the Autumn Sun story has been one of change and experimentation – pushing their creativity, songwriting, and live show to new limits... .. Starting out as a duo on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, the band has now relocated to Brisbane, grown to a four-piece, and is hard at work discovering an ever-evolving sound and approach to making music. For the record, the band features the talents of soulful singer Jana Penshorn, guitarist Terry Hesketh, and the rhythm section of percussionist Camryn Brown teamed with electric and double bassist Stuart Clifford... .. While it would be easy to lump the music they make together into the ‘nu-folk’ crowd, there’s much more going on here. At times dark and atmospheric, at times melodic and immediate, Autumn Sun thrive on creating music that’s built on instinct and emotion. It’s no surprise then that the band talks with admiration about artists including Brisbane legends george alongside the likes of Lior and The Sundays... .. And it’s a sound they captured last year with the release of their debut Gritty Love EP. Greeted with universally warm reviews, the record secured the band airplay around the country on stations as diverse as Triple J and Sydney’s fBi, to local and national ABC Radio and Brisbane’s Triple Zed. It’s release also saw MX describe Autumn Sun as “…a band on the rise”... .. Their new, richer sound has helped build Autumn Sun’s profile on the growing festival circuit through a run of appearances at the Woodford Folk Festival, the Queensland Music Festival, FUSE (Adelaide), Greenfest, the Q150 Shed and the Caloundra Music Festival – to name but a few. And it’s not just Queensland audiences embracing the band with last year’s national tour set to be the first of many... .. In keeping the with band’s commitment to charting new territory, the next 12 months is shaping up to be the most exciting in the band’s short history as they continue to hit the road and work towards their debut album release. Perhaps more importantly though, Autumn Sun is squarely focused on broadening their creative horizons – and that is what really counts... ..
