About me:

www.avert.orgAVERT Logo

AVERT is an international HIV and AIDS charity based in the UK, with the aim of AVERTing HIV and AIDS worldwide.

AVERT has a number of overseas projects, working to overcome HIV and AIDS in countries where there is a particularly high rate of infection, such as South Africa, or where there is a rapidly increasing rate of infection, such as in India.

We also take education and information to people in almost every country in the world through our highly successful web site, www.avert.org.

Stop AIDS in Children

Every year, nearly half a million children become infected with HIV. AVERT wants to see this number to drop dramatically, so from June 2007, we will be running the Stop AIDS in Children campaign! To make it successful however we need your help. Please support us by signing up and taking action, or by putting the Stop AIDS in Children logo on your page.

Check out AVERT’s newly updated teens section for loads of information and advice about everything to do with relationships and sex, as well as what you need to know about HIV and AIDS.

With discussions about first time sex, advice about birth control, and pages for anyone who is wondering whether they might be gay or lesbian, there is loads of useful information for young people.

We’ve also made some changes to our puberty pages, so now there’s even more helpful info about the changes that boys and girls experience when they go through puberty, and advice about how to cope in this difficult time.

    AIDS and Pain

Take a look at AVERT’s new webpage on AIDS and pain to gain an insight into how physical pain affects people living with HIV, how pain is treated, and barriers to treating it effectively.

Poor access to pain relieving medication such as morphine is very often related to fears about using and prescribing such opioids and strict regulation surrounding their use. However, without appropriate treatment many people with HIV will suffer needlessly. It is estimated that every year around one million people worldwide experience severe pain in the later stages of HIV infection due to a lack of effective pain medication.

At AVERT we are in the process of launching the new AIDS video page. We have collected more than a dozen videos about HIV/AIDS, including historical videos, videos of people living with HIV and some about HIV transmission, treatment and prevention.

Today we uploaded a video of Princess Diana speaking at an AIDS conference in 1993 and a video of the 1987 UK ‘tombstone’ AIDS advert. Take a look at the new videos to catch a glimpse into the early years of the AIDS epidemic.

Annabel, Director of AVERT, is off to South Africa on a fact-finding/sharing journey. First she is going to see the various rural projects that AVERT is involved with.
She will visit with the communities and accompany home-based care workers to learn more about the needs of people with HIV and their carers. This trip is a great opportunity to see first hand how the money donated to AVERT is helping people living with HIV and AIDS and how they can be best supported in future.

Secondly, Annabel is attending the South African AIDS Conference where she is displaying a poster presentation on improving prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) and practical support for doctors and hospitals. The poster draws on the experience of KwaZulu-Natal’s Manguzi hospital.

The avert. org website has two new pages care-related aspects of HIV.
Firstly, we have a page on HIV and AIDS care in the home, including discussion on what care is needed and provided, who provides it, and the issues faced by carer and patient alike.
There is also a new page on emotional needs and support which talks about the mental pain suffered by people with HIV and by people close to them. It considers the different emotions experienced upon being diagnosed, disclosing one’s status to others and at other stages of living with HIV.
